The Rule of Discord

Before the rule of Princess Celestia, there was a different leader. A leader who was
known to be powerful and wise in his rule. A leader who ruled in the name of freedom. A leader
who brought to greatness all the varying creatures that currently live today. A leader who was
called

Discord.

Discord once lived in an older world. One that no longer exists, according to the ponies.
One inhabited by many great and powerful creatures. One of these creatures was Discord.

As a young draconequus, Discord had no one to relate to. He came into existence without
ancestors, like all others in this world, but unlike the others, he was alone. No other being was
even remotely similar to him. He was constantly left out of any social activity. This exclusion
continued his entire youth. Even as he matured, the government took a strong disliking to him,
and he was constantly a scapegoat for all the problems. All this time, he yearned for one thing:
freedom. Freedom from the torturous words of his peers. Freedom from the oppressive harshness
of the society. Freedom that he never believed he would find.

Discord ended up being a common criminal, always in and out of jail with seemingly no
purpose. But all this changed when Discord committed a great crime against the tyrannical
government. He had used his magic powers to destroy an important governmental facility. This
rebellious act was found to be the most enjoyable thing he had ever done in his life so far. But
the judge decided that something as evil as Discord deserved a special punishment that had never
been given before: banishment to the unknown.

And with that, Discord was bound to a rocket and launched far away into space. Discord
was actually somewhat pleased with this decision, as there were no more haters attacking him in
his every moment. On the other hand, the endless drifting soon caused him to feel lonely, and he
even began to miss the ones who tormented him the most.

After many years of aimless drifting, the rocket eventually caught on the gravitational
pull of a desolate, barren planet. Discord fell, and was greatly injured, but he survived. The
planet was dark and lonely. No other life was there. Discord sat down, and soon he was asleep.

The next day, Discord was seized by a sudden urge of motivation. He realized that this
was the end to his miserable life, and a new beginning was his to create. Summoning the last
strength he had in his limp form, he conjured a gravitational pull much stronger than that of the
planet itself. Meteorites, containing small life forms within them, began to fall to the planet. This
is the beginning of Discords world.

Many years had passed since the first life arrived on the barren planet. It now was a lush
and beautiful world, with many wonders that Discord sculpted. At last, Discord was free. He had
all the time to do whatever he wished, and he did just that. All this freedom had but one cost.
Discord was completely alone. Other life forms existed, but they were not sentient. Discord
slowly lost his sanity, but retaining his belief in freedom. Soon, he imagined, sentience would
arrive and he would be able to have a friend.
But Discord never made any friends; all the organisms that became sentient feared him.
Discord knew that he had to prove himself of greatness to them all. This led to the rise of the 4
kingdoms: Dragon, Griffon, Changeling, and Dog. These kingdoms all held their leader Discord
in great respect, but they never befriended him. Discord never understood the true meaning of
friendship.

He began to believe that friendship was something he did not need. Something that was
for fools and weaklings. He had his own magic powers, and they were strong enough to keep
control over all the lands, which was enough. His realm was full of chaos, which delighted him
greatly. With each passing year, the 4 kingdoms would grow into stronger and stronger disputes,
feeding the appetite of the king of chaos.

However, this era of chaos would soon blossom into something more. The dragons,
griffons, and changelings all agreed that those not blessed with flight did not deserve to be a
kingdom. Thus, the 3 joined forces to form the avian army. The dogs were mercilessly
annihilated, their country ravaged, and few are ever heard from today.

The hate for the dogs was so strong, Discords powers rose tremendously. He became
able to create new, twisted life forms of his own. In this way, the first pony was created. No one
had ever seen such an absurd creature. Its body was equine, but with a pastel hue. Moreover,
there were several different types: the unicorn, which had a magical horn; the pegasus, which
bore wings; and the earth pony, a race considered inferior for its lack of both.

At first, these ponies were loyal to their creator, but after many generations, some grew to
be very powerful on their own. A notable unicorn, Starswirl the Bearded, was so mastered in the
arcane arts, he was able to match the strength of the draconequus. Discord feared this adversary,
so he created a super pony to defend him.

This pony was unlike any previously created. It was an alicorn, having both wings and a
horn. Her name was Selene. Her power was unrivalled. She was able to defeat Starswirl and steal
all of his discoveries of magic. As she and Discord ruled the land together, they began to grow
fond of each other.

Then, Selene discovered in the ancient tomes of Starswirl what life would be like without
Discord. She thought that the entire race of ponies had been deceived by their ruler. Confronting
her creator with this notion, she demanded an end to the chaos strewn across her kind.

Discord, fearing he would not be able to overcome an army of ponies rallied by Selene,
used powerful magic to split her soul into two halves. They became Celestia and Luna. Two
sisters born from the hate for discord.

The fateful two tried hard to fight their oppressor, but could not prevail. They needed a
stronger force to aid them, so they left the pony country, and travelled to the ends of the world.
They became learned in many arts, mastering mind and might. They learned to bend the wills of
all creatures, from dragons to griffons to changelings, in their favor.

Deep in a dungeon, the two found a mysterious mirror, which was actually a portal to
another dimension. This was the human world. Seeing so many people thriving in peace opened
their eyes to friendship. They had never seen such a powerful magic. The two learned of a set of
ancient artifacts, called the Elements of Harmony. These would be the catalyst for stopping the
reign of Discord through friendship.

Returning to their world, they found Starswirl the Bearded, almost dead from old age.
Not recognizing that he was conversing to his former adversary, he agreed to help them, for he
knew the location of the Element of Magic. However, the Element of Magic could only be found
if all the others were also present. With this, he gave his final breath.

Celestia and Luna knew that they needed to find the elements quickly before their ruler
would find out about their plot. They first travelled to the Griffon Kingdom, who had been most
friendly to them during their previous visit. There, they found the Element of Kindness.

Afterwards, they ventured into the mountains to get to the Dragon Kingdom. Amongst
the masses of treasure kept by the great beasts, they found the Element of Generosity. The
dragons eagerly gifted it to the two to help them on their quest, even though they did not actually
oppose discord.

At the Changeling Kingdom, they were met with unexpected hostility. Their queen,
Chrysalis, had grown to be powerful, and she laughed at the sisters requests. After a short duel,
in which Celestia won, they found the Element of Laughter stored in the palace. Denouncing
authoritarianism, the duo took it and left.

After the bad encounter with one of the great kingdoms, the two decided to visit a new
place: the Buffalo Nation. The buffalo tribes realized quickly how esteemed their visitors were,
and were very eager to help. The Element of Honesty was added to the collection, and now only
one more was needed to unlock the final element.

Unfortunately, there were no other living civilizations left at this point, so Celestia and
Luna were at a loss. They wandered aimlessly, looking for clues. Suddenly, they were attacked
by Cerberus, who left his post at Tartarus. Fortunately, the alicorns were more than a match for
the three-headed dog. Their magic was enough to send the poor creature back to the underworld.

Seeing the beast reminded Luna of the ancient Dog Kingdom. The two sisters travelled to
the ruins, and they found among the skeletons of the canine soldiers another shiny jewel. It was
the Element of Loyalty. Now they only needed one more to complete their travels.

Celestia and Luna returned to the house of Starswirl the Bearded. Holding up the
elements to the structure, it began to shake. Gradually getting more and more violent the quakes
knocked the area up into the air. Underneath the floating island that held the residence was a
mystical tree. Inside this was the final element: the Element of Magic!

All the while, Discord had been living his life in ecstasy. Everything was going well.
Each day brought about more absurd happenings, quenching his thirst for disorder. Then he
learned that the alicorns he had created had returned. He turned his vicinity into a fortress of
chaos. He then began preparing plunderseeds, so that he can rise again after this encounter.

Celestia and Luna arrive, armed with the Elements of Harmony. Discord knows that he
is not strong enough to battle this arcane force, so he laughs and spreads his plunderseeds while
the sisters fire a laser of rainbows. The magic turns him into a stone statue, and his reign ends.
With this, Celestia and Luna officially separate the pony country from the other kingdoms, and it
is named Equestria. The reign of alicorns begins, but Discord is not gone forever.
