I really believe that the ability to read the word and the world is iportant !Freire "
#acedo$ 1%&'() *s a social +ustice educator$ I want to allow y students to reali,e that they have
this ability and that they are capable of ipleentin- it wherever they -o) *s students becoe
failiar with their world$ they can perceive and understand it better by readin- it$ which helps
the -et rid of their fears of the un.nown !Freire " #acedo() In traditional schoolin-$ students
are hindered fro doin- this$ which leaves students to have any blind spots about historical or
current issues) Students have the ability to epower theselves in order to disrupt the syste
that is .eepin- their stories ar-inali,ed) I believe in the iportance of students not only sharin-
their word and their world$ but how they are able to do so) I do not want to hinder students fro
e/pressin- theselves in a way that is cofortable to the) In y classroo$ I hope for y
students to be able to +ust be theselves and reeber where they cae fro)
#y teachin- philosophy represents a culturally relevant curriculu in which students are
able to share their personal stories and e/periences to a.e connections to what they are learnin-
in class) With that said$ education should not be a one0way street) I stron-ly believe that students
have the potential to both teach and learn fro each otherthe teacher is not the only one who
holds all the .nowled-e) I also believe it is iportant to sustain an open line of counication
with parents$ -uardians$ and counity ebers$ in order for students to reach the necessary
levels of success)

opportunities for y students to counter those ways) 5ecause I want to be a history teacher$ I see
the iportance of opportunities to reflect on our own histories and cultures$ especially the
cultural assets we have -ained fro our failies !#oll$ 1%%&()
#oll states that we have collected cultural .nowled-e and ways of survival fro our
hoe lives) It is iportant to not dichotoi,e the classroo and the 1real world)2 6he
.nowled-e that students -ain fro their failies is as iportant as what they will be learnin- in
school) 6heir ways of survival ay be different fro their peers$ which validates that a
curriculu that represents the so0called 1one0si,e fits all2 approach will not be eanin-ful$
because it ar-inali,es who they are and where they coe fro) Siilar to #oll7s ideas$ 1who
we are and how we thin. is a function of the social interactions in which we participate2 !Dia, "
Flores$ 4881$ p-) 38() I would li.e y students to reali,e the iportance of interconnectedness
with their peers$ friends$ and faily ebers) In doin- so$ they are able to ac.nowled-e where
they learned certain lessons or pic.ed up siilar habits or interests of the people they .now)
*s a social +ustice educator$ I not only want to attain the -oal of representin- Filipin9
*ericans$ but all people of color$ especially those whose stories and e/periences have been
bottled up$ waitin- to be spilled out) I strive to learn how to transfor education in schools
where the voices of students need to be heard$ and their teachers reflect their identities$
e/periences$ and interests) #y belief in social +ustice education lies in the power of educators to
influence a -eneration of students to becoe authors of their own histories) *s an author of
ine$ I would li.e to help others write their stories by providin- the with reasons to ebrace
who they are and where they cae fro) I want to be the teacher who contributes to a space
where students can freely e/press theselves$ teach their peers the iportance of their own
histories$ and becoe authors in creatin- a future of hope)
