(aided by US and the UN)
USA considered use of
atomic bomb and the
Americans still maintain a
strong military presence
in South Korea

Canadian Troops served in UN forces and Korea
was the last major conflict Canada was directly
involved in until the Persian Gulf War in 1991
The Korean War was also the last major conflict
not to have been covered by television media, and
as a result it is often known as the forgotten war

The Suez Crisis (1956)

Israel (aided by the United States) and Egypt
(aided by USSR) were at the brink of war after
Egypts president Gamal Abdel Nasser closed
the Suez Canal to Israeli shipping

This decision resulted from Britain and the US
withdrew their offer to help with construction of
the Aswan Dam to marginalise Nasser

Canadian Lester B. Pearson proposed a United
Nations peacekeeping force (UNEF) be sent in
to keep the borders at peace while a political
settlement was being worked out

Pearson won Nobel
Peace Prize in 1957
and Canada gains
international reputation
as peacekeeping nation

the Potsdam Agreement
divided Germany into four
occupation zones (Britain,
France, United States and
USSR)
