NOUN

A noun is the name of a person, place,


thing, or idea.
A cat is an animal.
VERB
Verbs carry the idea of being or action in a
sentence.
ADJECTIVE
Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence.
The yellow tulips always bloom
nicely.
ADVERB
Adverbs are words that modify a verb, an adjective, or another
adverb.
The student excitedly pointed at the
whiteboard as he answered the
question.
PRONOUN
Generally (but not always) pronouns stand for (pro + noun) or refer to a noun, an
individual or individuals or thing or things (the pronoun's antecedent) whose identity is
made clear earlier in the text.
Franks kids kissed him for Fathers Day.
PREPOSITION
A preposition describes a relationship between other words in a sentence.
The kids snorkeled under the sea on their
trip.
INTERJECTION
Interjections are words or phrases used to exclaim or protest or command.
Oh, dear!
CONJUNCTION
A conjunction is a joiner, a word that connects (conjoins) parts of a sentence.
Peanut butter and jelly is my favorite
sandwich!
