WebQuests: Assignment 2.1
Abstract
This documents provides a brief explanation of how WebQuest can serve as an effective
tool in the classroom. The document provides a hotlist of eight WebQuests, which can be
used within a high school level English Language Arts classroom. WebQuests can be
highly effective especially for the 21
st
century learner as they integrate technology and
promote critical thinking.
WebQuests: Assignment 2.1

According to San Diego State University, a WebQuest is, an inquiry-oriented
activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from the
resources on the Internet. As the function technology pertains within education increases
to meet the need of the 21-century leaner, it is imperative educators have the knowledge
and resources to provide students with content in an engaging and interactive way.
WebQuests are lessons in which students can access through the use of the computer, and
with the right teacher input and program design, a technology-based tutorial can be an
effective way to infuse activities into the curriculum that require and develop creative
thinking (Cennamo and Ross, 2012, P.87). Students do not simply research tasks while
using a WebQuest, but instead they are aided to develop individual knowledge as content
is provided through online delivery. WebQuests allocate students with the opportunity to
work independently, however the process to complete the given task is through a level of
scaffolding and the process to complete the given task is well explained (Pearson, 2014).
As students use WebQuests their knowledge acquisition will increase, the will develop
the ability to extend and refine knowledge, and learn how to manage their time
effectively.
WebQuest consist of six critical attributes, which include: 1. Introduction
(provides a brief summary about the WebQuest), 2. task (an activity or series of activities
that are doable and interesting), 3. informative sources (resources embedded into
WebQuest to help students complete task), 4. process ( an outline which describes the
steps students need to take to complete the given task), 5. guidance (questions, directions,

graphic organizers, diagrams and visuals), and 6. conclusion (summarizes what students
should have learned upon completion of the WebQuest task). A WebQuest that
appropriately exhibits these six critical attributes will serve as great resource for
promoting high-level thinking. According to Cennamo and Ross, Just like a teacher,
technology-based tutorials can initiate or frame a meaningful discussion. Unlike a
teacher, however, the software will never be intolerant or pass judgment on students
responses. When used as intended, tutorials provide opportunities for students to learn
new knowledge or skills. When used in more open-ended ways, they can provide
additional opportunities for students to engage in activities that support creative thinking
through reflection, meaningful conversations, and self-assessment (2012, P.88).
WebQuests are an effective tool to use within the classroom as they allow students to
develop and improve their skills as 21-centruy learners.
Prior to this assignment I was unfamiliar with WebQuests, and in fact had never
used one before. Now that I have familiarized myself with the advantages of integrating a
WebQuest into my classroom, I intend to use them within my English Language Arts
classroom. Integrating WebQuests will allow me to differentiate instruction and allow my
students to develop the knowledge of the content as they learn to work independently and
collaboratively with their peers while being guided through the given task.
