ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardners Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will be able to determine the different aspects that serve as cultural expression. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to identify ways in which language, stories, folktales, music, media and art serve as expressions of culture. Process/Skills: Students will learn a variety of cultures and be able to relate that to their own culture. Students will create their own heritage card along with a card about a culture learned in class, which will be presented. Values/Dispositions: Students will learn about different cultures, and will be able to expand their horizons and learn about someone else. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardners Multiple Intelligences Rationale: This is an important unit because it demonstrates to students how all different aspects (language, stories, etc) serve as expression for a culture. Students are also able to learn about 4 ancient cultures.
Standards: State Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards STATE GOAL 18: Understand social systems, with an emphasis on the United States. 18.A.2 Explain ways in which language, stories, folk tales, music, media and artistic creations serve as expressions of culture. National NCSS Themes Culture, people/places/environment, individuals/groups/institutions, power/authority and civic/ideals/practices Logical/Mathematical Logical/Mathematical In this activity students will compare and write different equations. They will compare our number system to one of the following ancient number systems. 1)the Egyptians, 2)the Babylonians, 3) the Mayans and 4) the Romans. *the students have already learned the different number systems* Materials: Scrap paper Pencil Reference sheet for ancient number systems Verbal/Linguistic Verbal/Linguistic In this activity students will be grouped into four. Each group will be assigned one of the four different ancient cultural groups. Each group will write 2 sentences, then write the two sentences in the language that the ancient group would have used. After finishing both tasks one group member will read them to the class-to the best of their ability. Materials: -Alphabet lists for all 4 ancient cultures -Paper -Pencil Musical/Rhythmic Musical/Rhythmic In this activity students will be focusing on the ancient Egyptians- and the music that they used. Students will create their own drums and also use hand clapping when creating a song about the ancient Egyptians. The song must be 30 seconds in length and talk a little about the customs of the Egyptians. Materials: -Song -Pencil -Paper Visual/Spatial Visual/Spatial In this activity students will be given a map- and in a group they will have to show where different cultures live throughout the World. Along with showing on the map they must also draw a letter from the alphabet or a piece of art that symbolizes the culture. Materials: -Map -Pencils -Alphabet referenece (if needed) Body/Kinesthetic Body/Kinesthetic In this activity, students will choose from 4 stories that can be folktales or stories from ancient cultures. Within groups they will create and write a small-1 minute skit- using actions and acting out. The class will then have to guess which ancient culture or culture the skit is derived from. The students will be given supplies to create anything they need to look like certain people( paper for crowns). Materials: -Paper, pencil, construction paper, crayons, pipe cleaners and any other supplies.
Interpersonal Interpersonal In this activity students will be give one of the 4 different ancient cultures (at random). They will then be able to go to the computer lab as a class and research different art work from their specific ancient culture. They will then choose one piece of art and write 2 sentence about it and why it was/is important to that culture. Materials: -Computers in the lab -Paper -Pencil Intrapersonal Intrapersonal In this activity students will students will be writing in their journal entry about their own cultures. They will include the language, any stories, music, media or art. This is a reflective journal about their own culture. Naturalistic Naturalistic In this activity students will take a field trip to The Art Institute of Chicago. When here students can view the art work, and take what they learned in the classroom. The students can apply what they have been learning about different ancient cultures and their own cultures. Assessment: 1.Students will be assed on their own culture cards and one card about an ancient culture. Online Resources:
