Club Features
The Club
Course designed by Ben Sayers & others in 1897 A parkland course with excellent turf ideal for 36 hole play
suitable all ages a good test of golf.
Full catering and bar service with seperate games and tv room.
Well suited for visiting parties , quite flat , apart from the 18th when you can usually tell if someone is having a
good round or not by the way they trudge up the hill, quite short , but well protected by trees and small tricky
greens which are allways in superb condition.
Par 67 comprises of 5 par threes and 13 par fours . The signature hole is the 11th which is a drive then a blind
second shot 30ft down to a green that is walled on two sides by steep embankments and out of bounds left and
through the green. Add to this two bunkers and a burn and it lets you know how tricky this hole is . The 11th
hole is just part of what they call amen corner in canmore , it starts at the ninth with the burn running across
the fairway and the loch at the back of the green , then the 10th hole with out of bounds running all the way
along the hole on the left side as is the 11th . after the 11th you meet the 12th hole , a par three at just under
200 yards , where you have to hit a tee shot over a big gorge that is full of trees then to the 13th which is a par
3 of around the same length with out of bounds to the left of the green. If you have completed these holes not
having dropped many shots then you should be on a decent score.
The 19th hole is allways very welcoming and the food is excellent.
The dress code is smart but casual , no football colours on the course or clubhouse.
The Course
The course at canmore golf club has been at its present site since1902. Until 1913 the course consisted of nine
holes with the present third being the original first. In 1914 the course layout changed to eighteen with the help
of mr Ben Sayers of Berwick.
Soon after the opening of the new course, most of it was given up to help with the war effort mainly for the
purpose of drying netted flax. The course was given back to the club in 1921 and by the following year,
redesigned, was fully operational. This lasted until 1941 when again, most of the course was given up for the
war effort - this time in the form of cultivated land.
The course was again given back to the club in 1946, again redesigned, and with the exception of a few minor
changes this is the current layout.
In recent years many trees have been added to the course, creating a more defined layout.
Canmore is an interesting challenge for golfers at all levels of ability and being of moderate length ideal for two
rounds in one day. It provides a good test with rewards for accuracy and a good short game.

A SHORT PAR FOUR WITH TREES ON THE LEFT AND A LARGE TREE
TO THE RIGHT WITH A SHALLOW BUNKER ON THE RIGHT AS WELL .
THIS BUNKER SHOULD ONLY COME INTO PLAY IF YOU DON,T CATCH
YOUR TEE SHOT QUITE RIGHT. THERE IS A SMALL DEEP BUNKER TO
THE LEFT OF THE GREEN AND LARGE FIR TREES TO THE REAR . THIS
GREEN HAS QUITE A BIG SLOPE FROM RIGHT TO LEFT ON IT AND
THE AFORE MENTIONED BUNKER IS WAITING FOR YOUR BALL.
FROM THE MEDAL TEE YOU WOULD BE BETTER HITTING YOUR
DRIVE STRAIGHT OR WITH A VERY SLIGHT DRAW AND THE
FAIRWAY WHICH SLOPES FROM RIGHT TO LEFT SHOULD PUT YOU
IN A GOOD POSITION ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. LEAK YOUR TEE
SHOT UP TO THE RIGHT AND YOUR SECOND SHOT IS A NIGHTMARE
!

A SHORT DOWNHILL PAR THREE , HIT YOUR TEE SHOT SHORT AND
THERE IS A BIG BUNKER WAITING , GO LEFT AND THERE IS
ANOTHER , GO RIGHT AND THERE ARE TWO BUNKERS , FINALLY GO
BIG AND YOU ARE LOOKING AT A FLOP SHOT BACK ON TO THE
GREEN THAT IS RAISED IN FRONT OF YOU . AND THATS IF YOU ARE
LUCKY ENOUGH NOT TO HAVE WENT DOWN THE STEEP
EMBANKMENT AT THE REAR WHERE THERE IS MANY A BALL. APART
FROM THAT , QUITE A NICE LITTLE PAR THREE . AND IF YOU
HAPPEN TO MAKE A HOLE IN ONE HERE IN MEDAL PLAY YOU WILL
BE REWARDED WITH A SUNDAY POST PUTTER.
8 - JANEFIELD
Championship - 334 Medal - 334 Regular - 326 C'ship Ladies - 286 Ladies & Juniors - 286
THIS CAN BE A NASTY PAR FOUR . YOU TEE OFF FROM AN ELEVATED
POSITION LOOKING AT THICK TREES ON THE LEFT AND OUT OF
BOUNDS ON THE SHORT RIGHT. HOWEVER YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
DRIVE OVER THIS BUT DONT QUITE CATCH IT AND ITS RELOAD.
THE FAIRWAY STRETCHING IN FRONT OF YOU GOES UPHILL
TOWARDS THE GREEN WHERE IT STARTS TO LEVEL OFF. THE BIG
HITTERS AMONGST YOU CAN CARRY THE BALL ALL THE WAY UP THE
TOP OF THE HILL LEAVING JUST A SHORT CHIP UP TO THE GREEN
WHICH IS PROTECTED BY TWO BUNKERS , ONE TO THE LEFT AND
ONE TO THE FRONT RIGHT, WITH OUT OF BOUNDS AT THE REAR OF
THE GREEN. HOWEVER, IF YOUR TEE SHOT IS A BIT SHORT THEN
THE HILL IS WAITING TO TURN YOUR SHORT SECOND SHOT INTO
SOMETHING MUCH NASTIER. A MID IRON WITH THE OUT OF
BOUNDS AT THE REAR
9 - THE LOCH
Championship - 375 Medal - 375 Regular - 371 C'ship Ladies - 331 Ladies & Juniors - 331
Championship - 375 Medal - 375 Regular - 358 C'ship Ladies - 340 Ladies & Juniors - 340
A PAR FOUR WITH ALL THE ROOM IN THE WORLD ON THE RIGHT
AND NO ROOM WHAT SO EVER ON THE LEFT. IT IS A STRAIGHT
HOLE WITH OUT OF BOUNDS ON THE LEFT AND A STEEP SLOPE
RUNNING FROM RIGHT TO LEFT ALL ALONG THE HOLE. IF YOU GO
TOO FAR RIGHT THEN YOUR SECOND SHOT IS AIMING OUT OF
BOUNDS. IF YOU OVER CLUB IT,S RELOAD AND IF YOU UNDER CLUB
THEN YOU FACE THE DANGER OF HITTING THE HILL AND GOING
THROUGH THE GREEN ANYWAY. HIT A NICE STRAIGHT DRIVE AND
YOU HAVE QUITE AN EASY SHOT INTO THE GREEN , AND IF YOU DO
HAPPEN TO OVER CLUB A LITTLE THEN THE SLOPE THROUGH THE
BACK OF THE GREEN WILL BRING YOUR BALL BACK ON TO THE
DANCE FLOOR.

Championship - 184 Medal - 184 Regular - 178 C'ship Ladies - 173 Ladies & Juniors - 173
LAST OF THE PAR THREES AND ONE THAT HAS A FEW DANGERS.
THIS GREEN SLOPES FROM RIGHT TO LEFT AND HAS A LARGE
FRONT BUNKER THAT IS ABOUT TEN YARDS SHORT OF THE GREEN
WITH TWO FURTHER GREENSIDE BUNKERS RIGHT AND LEFT. THERE
ARE TREES TO THE LEFT AND A FEW TREES ON THE RIGHT . THERE
IS ALSO A WATER HAZARD ON THE BACK LEFT WITH OUT OF
BOUNDS BEHIND IT, BUT THIS SHOULDN,T COME INTO PLAY.
16 - BROOMFIELD
Championship - 258 Medal - 258 Regular - 251 C'ship Ladies - 243 Ladies & Juniors - 243
THIS SHORT PAR FOUR CAN REALLY HELP YOUR SCORE, IF YOU HIT
A GOOD TEE SHOT. GO LEFT AND YOU COULD QUITE EASILY LOSE
YOUR BALL, GO RIGHT AND YOU COULD BE BLOCKED OUT BY ONE
OF TWO POCKETS OF TREES. THERE ARE THREE BUNKERS ON THIS
HOLE , ONE SHORT AND RIGHT AND TWO FRONT GREENSIDE. THE
GREEN IS QUITE FLAT WITH SOME SUBTLE BORROWS AND A STEEP
SLOPE LEFT OF THE GREEN. A GOOD STRAIGHT TEE SHOT HERE AND
A BIRDIE HERE IS VERY POSSIBLE AND MAYBE EVEN AN EAGLE .
THERE HAVE EVEN BEEN SOME HOLES IN ONE HERE.
17 - SANDWICH
Championship - 430 Medal - 430 Regular - 421 C'ship Ladies - 412 Ladies & Juniors - 412
18 - UP THE HILL
Championship - 323 Medal - 323 Regular - 243 C'ship Ladies - 240 Ladies & Juniors - 240
THE LAST. A PAR FOUR FROM THE BACK TEE IS A LOT HARDER
THAN FROM THE FRONT TEE. GO LEFT HERE AND ALL THE GOOD
WORK DONE BEFORE HAND MEANS JACK. YOU JUST DON,T GO
THERE IF YOU ARE ON A SCORE . YOU HAVE QUITE A BIT OF ROOM
ON THE RIGHT WITH THE FAIRWAY FROM THE FOURTEENTH AS
WELL. THERE IS A BUNKER ON EACH SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY AT
ABOUT THE LANDING AREA OF MOST GOLFERS THOUGH THE BETTER
STRIKERS OF THE BALL WILL CARRY THESE. THE TEE SHOT IS UP A
STEEP HILL THEN IT FLATTENS OUT SLIGHTLY , WITH A FEW
TROUBLESOME TREES ON THE RIGHT AND A LOT MORE ON THE
LEFT. AT THE GREEN THERE ARE ANOTHER COUPLE OF BUNKERS
FRONT RIGHT AND LEFT. THE GREEN HAS A VERY SEVERE SLOPE ON
IT WHICH SLOPES BACK TOWARDS THE TEE AND HAS BEEN THREE
PUTTED OR WORSE QUITE A FEW TIMES , AND ALL IN FRONT OF
THE VERY LARGE WINDOWS IN THE CLUBHOUSE!
