Welcome!
Today we are going to focus on Learning Targets. We will
answer the following questions
Form: What is a learning target?
Function: How is a learning target written?
Causation: How does it impact student learning?
You will be working in vertical groups. The names are on
the tables.
PYP Mission
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring,
knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a
better and more peaceful world through intercultural
understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments
and international organizations to develop challenging
programmes of international education and rigorous
assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to
become active, COMPASSIONATE and lifelong learners who
understand that other people, with their differences, can also
be right.

Goals
Reading Goals:
88% of all students will be proficient on MCA tests in 2014
76% of Black students will be proficient on MCA tests in 2014
Math Goals:
80% of all students will be proficient on MCA tests in 2013
62% of Black students will be proficient on MCA tests in 2013
ATPPS Goal:
Discipline Goals: Each school will reduce the TOTAL number of
discipline incidents by 5% compared to its total number for the previous
year. Each school will reduce the total PERCENTAGE of Black students
involved in disciplinary incidents by 10%.

We will address the individual needs of our diverse
learners.

We will honor and use time wisely.
We will be open to new ideas and change, keeping a
sense of flexibility.
We will assume positive intentions.
We will celebrate and connect.
Learning Targets
I can write a learning target that is appropriate for my
learners.
I can assess a learning target.
Learning Targets
A process, both formal and informal, that teacher and
students use to know where they need to go in the
intended learning, where they are and how go close the
gap.
Purpose: Collect evidence to inform learning-for both
the teacher and students.
Often defined as assessment for learning or
formative assessments.

Steps for Writing
1. Unpack the goal or standard.
Consider the knowledge or skills students need to know to master
the goal or standard.
2. Break the goal or standard down to smaller pieces. These
smaller pieces are learning targets.
Scaffold the learning into a progression.
Changes daily as students grow in their understanding of the
goal or standard.
3. Identify what students are to know or do.
Use verbs that accurate reflect what they are to show.
4. Write in student friendly language.
