Activity: Chair or take leadership in a subcommittee that writes your School

Improvement Plan.

Description:

I worked with the administration and the leadership team to develop the School
Improvement plan based on the previous years data and while making sure to align the
plan to the schools vision.

What went well?

Throughout the process we made sure to constantly consult the past three years data sets
to guide us as we set out create the plan. According to our vision, East Brainerd is
committed to fostering a caring environment where students and teachers feel safe to
share their ideas, explore challenging education and value growth that leads to life-long
learning. Looking at our SIP you will see that we are attempting to make sure that all
children achieve this vision since we specifically note goals that target subgoups that are
not meeting expectations. Since we have such a diverse student population, it was
important to the planning committee to create goals for that reflected our diversity.

What did not?

The hardest part of this process was finding a time for everyone to be able to meet. This
caused many of the committee members who were supposed to be in attendance to not
show. I feel like the lack of representation from all grade levels was a definite downfall
and it also caused the grade levels to not have vested interest and fair representation in
the SIP.

Given the chance to do it again, how would you do it better?

If given the chance to do this task over again I would make sure to review the vision
throughout the process. While it was considered, I do not feel that is was reviewed often
enough to where we can honestly say that it was at the forefront of the decisions that
were made. I would also make sure that the meeting dates were determined well in
advance and that all teachers were made aware of the dates so that proper representation
was at all meetings.

Source of Progress: Source of Challenge:
Students in grades 3-5 at East
Brainerd Elementary have made
gains in mathematics. Gains for
these grade levels may be
attributed to the following: 1) The
math chairs in each grade level
share information with their grade
level teams after each training
during common planning times.
They math chairs also help
present school-based professional
development three times during
the school year. 2) Each grade
level has common planning time
and meets weekly to discuss
lesson plans for the upcoming
week. Teachers discuss content
areas that need to be re-taught and
determine which students need
extra support in small group
instruction. 3) Grade level teams
work together during common
planning to find and/or modify

curriculum and materials and use
district pacing guides and
Hamilton County Mathematics
Framework when appropriate.
Each grade level disaggregates
data from formative district
quarterly math assessments to
adjust teaching strategies and
identify students for RTI.

Students in grade 4 and 5 at East
Brainerd Elementary have made
gains in Read/Language Arts.
These gains may be attributed to
the following: 1) Teachers use
quarterly writing assessments and
Founts and Pennells Benchmark
data to identify and track student
progress and provide better small
group instruction. 2) Teachers in
these grade levels use the Founts
and Pennell Continuum of
Literacy Learning and Words
Their Way 5
th
Edition while
planning common core standards
based reading/language arts
lessons during weekly common
planning.
