AUTO INTENSITY CONTROL OF STREET LIGHTS

ABSTRACT:
White Light Emitting Diodes (LED) replaces HID lamps in street lighting system to
include dimming feature. A microcontroller of 80! family is used to control the intensity "y
de#eloping pulse $idth modulated signals that dri#es a %&'(E) to s$itch the LEDs
according to achie#e desired operation.
In the present system* mostly the lightning up of high$ays is done through High
Intensity Discharge lamps (HID)* $hose energy consumption is high. Its intensity cannot "e
controlled according to the re+uirement so there is a need to s$itch on to an alternati#e
method of lightning system i.e.* "y using LEDs. )his system is "uild to o#ercome the present
day dra$"ac,s of HID lamps. )his system demonstrates the usage of the LED-s (light
emitting diodes) as the light source and its #aria"le intensity control* according to the
re+uirement. LED-s consume less po$er and its life time is more* as compared to the
con#entional HID lamps. )he more important and interesting feature is its intensity can "e
controlled according to the re+uirement during non pea, hours $hich is not feasi"le in HID
lamps.
A cluster of LEDs are used to form a street light. )he microcontroller contains
programma"le instructions $hich controls the intensity of lights "ased on the .W% (.ulse
$idth modulation) signals generated. )he intensity of lights are ,ept high during the pea,
hours* as the traffic on the roads tend to decrease slo$ly in the late nights* the intensity also
decreases progressi#ely till morning. (inal it completely shuts do$n at morning /* and again
resumes at /pm in the e#ening. )he process is repeated.
)his concept in future can "e enhanced "y integrating it $ith the solar panel* $hich
con#erts the solar intensity into corresponding #oltage* and this energy is used to feed up the
high$ay lights.
