Title: Learning Shapes with the use of Laban Movements
Math Topic: Learning Shapes (Circle, Rectangle, Square, Triangle)
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Materials: Visual aids of shapes with recorded music

Objectives:
Students will be able to recognize and identify four different shapes with the
use of musical movements. Students will recreate the movement with the respecting
shape to the class.

Standards:
TEKs:
111.12. Mathematics, Kindergarten
(K.9) Geometry and Spatial Reasoning:
o The student recognizes attributed of two- and three-
dimensional geometric figures. The student is expected
to:
(C ) Describe, identify, and compare circles,
triangles, rectangles, and squares.

Procedures:
1. First, the teacher will explain what the students are going to be learning
a. We are going to be learning the following shapes: the circle, triangle,
rectangle, and square. Students will be learning the number of sides
and corners of each shape by counting and drawing the shape in the
air.
b. From these particular shapes, students will practice to identify each
shape with objects used in our daily life.
2. Secondly, the teacher will create a movement activity in where the student
will practice each of the shapes.
a. Students will be creating shapes by use of corresponding movements
with their bodies for each of the shapes learned.
b. During the activity students will be demonstrating Laban movements
such as:
i. Continuous Flow
ii. Quick Time
iii. Direct Space
iv. Slow Time
3. Finally, the teacher will direct a game that includes the learned topics of
movements and shapes.
a. Before beginning, the teacher will provide specific directions there
shows the different movements for each particular shape.
i. Like musical chairs, the students will get in a circle.
ii. The teacher will then place a card (at random) at each of the
students feet with the card facing down.
1. Each card will have a specific shape for the student to
identify by movement (triangle, circle, rectangle,
square)
iii. When the music starts the students will move (in the direction
the teacher chooses) and stop when the music stops.
iv. At that time the student will bend down, flip over the card and
do the movement the card suggests.
1. Triangle: Fly like an airplane (making a triangle over
their head
2. Square: Dance like a robot
3. Circle: bounce like a ball
4. Rectangle: Fly like a flag
b. During the game, students will get to demonstrate different
movements related to objects that are designed as the shapes learned.
c. The game will include figures of the shapes learned, all forming a
circle on the ground. Students will dance around the circle along with
a recorded song. When the music is stopped, the students will have a
chance to demonstrate the specific movement corresponding to the
shape, like bouncing like a circular ball.

Assessment:
The lesson of the shapes, in its entirety will take around 8 minutes, giving the
teacher about 2 minutes for each shape since the students will already have
general knowledge of the shapes being reviewed.
The teacher will then take around 10 minutes for the movement activity with the
children to go over the corresponding Laban movements with each shape.
Upon finishing the movement activity, the students will then have another 10
minutes to play the musical shape game.
At the end of the lesson and activities, the teacher will ask questions to the
students to review the shapes learned. Such as:
o How many sides does a rectangle have?
o What is a ball shaped like?
o How did your body feel when you were waving like a
flag?
o How did you move your body to be more like a robot
made of squares?
