footballers earn very high salaries because it is
a dangerous s$ort. ;oth sides call %itnesses <
the referee+ a $olice officer+ a s$orts

4he $lay ends at the moment the 8ury leaves
the courtroom to decide on the case. 4he
readers or the actors can ma"e u$ the ending for
themselves+ 8udging the evidence they have
heard as if they %ere a real 8ury.
H =ac"(round and themes
4he central Muestion of the $lay is %hether
someone is to blame for an accidental in8ury. In
many countries around the %orld there is an
increasing tendency to find someone to blame
for an event and ta"e them to court. If someone
sli$s over on the $avement+ for e>am$le+ they
might try to sue the council in charge of
$avement maintenance. If something goes
%rong during a hos$ital o$eration+ the $atient
may choose to sue the hos$ital for %hatever
e>tra suffering he or she has e>$erienced. 7 fe%
years ago this %ould not have ha$$ened. Geo$le
%ould have said it %as an accident or bad luc"+
and %ould not have e>$ected money. 4here are
legal firms that s$ecialise in Hambulance
chasing@. 4hey loo" for clients %ho have
suffered in8ury and encourage them to ta"e the

4he t%o footballers at the centre of this $lay
earn very high salaries. 4hey $lay for to$
league clubs -the names are invented.. League
football is big business today. Clubs have huge
turnovers+ %hich include fees from television
rights for sho%ing their games+ sale of football
shirts and other merchandise as %ell as the
money the fans $ay to come into the ground.
;ut clubs have to com$ete for to$ $layers and
$ay very high %ages+ and these are often more
than they can afford. (everal PO football teams
are in dee$ financial trouble. International
Euro$ean matches are very im$ortant not 8ust

governing bodies+ in the media and mar"eting.
In today@s more fle>ible 8ob mar"et+ many
$eo$le have to reJtrain half%ay through their
%or"ing lives.
4he courtroom has been a $o$ular $lace for
drama for centuries+ going right bac" to
(ha"es$eare@s *erchant o( /enice. It $rovides a
good o$$ortunity to build u$ sus$ense and
tension. 4here can be sudden t%ists $rovided by
ne% evidence or sur$rise %itnesses+ as in this
$lay. 4here are o$$ortunities for close
$sychological and emotional studies of
character. 1itnesses can be tric"ed into saying
the %rong thing by clever la%yers. 4he
resolution of the story often comes suddenly
and dramatically at the very end in the verdict
of the 8ury < guilty or not guilty.
*ou don@t need a great "no%ledge of football
