MODULE 2: iPad Boot Camp

by Karah Parks

The research suggests that the adoption and use of iPads in and beyond the classroom allows
students to augment and enhance their learning in ways that were previously not possible or not
so easy to do (Heinrich, 2012; DEECD, 2011).
Why use iPads at all?
- Student-centered
- Scaffold-friendly
- Uses tech that students already use to self-educate

Getting started:
Things to remember
Have a sense of humor and be flexible technology doesnt always work the way
you want it to, and some aspects move more slowly than expected i.e. slow
internet connection.
Dont hesitate to ask for help if you need it via the discsussion board or e-
mail/tweet to me. There are also trouble shooting techniques at the end of this
reading.
Dont panic if you think youve done something wrong. It is very, very hard to
break the iPad software. Learning not to panic yourself will help your students
when they make similar mistakes.

Most-used applications:

Icons of most used apps look like this:
Open them up, and play around!

Safari internet access! (see video tutorial)

Settings all iPad settings! (see video tutorial)
Camera useful for simple picture-taking, filming and recording! (see video
tutorial)
Camera roll pictures & movies get exported here! (see video tutorial)

Whiteboard app this is fun for pictionary and other drawing activities.

Instructions for the Whiteboard app:
1. To erase previous images, hit the blank button at the bottom of the screen.

2. To start drawing with different colors, hit any of the colors and select the color you
want from the pallette. You can also choose the width of your brush stroke and the
opacity (the density) of your color.

3. To see your canvas full screen, hit the little box in the corner. To return the size, hit
the box again.

4. To insert an image or another element, such as text, hit the import button.

5. To share the image, hit the arrow going out of the box at the top.

6. Finally, to share your screen with other iPads in the class, hit the connect button.
