This past semester I had the pleasure to supervise Ashley Jones while she taught one unit of Math 20-1 to a group of students and at a later date she taught one unit of Math 10C. At all times she maintained a very professional yet friendly demeanor. She was well liked.
Ashley showed up each class well planned and prepared. Her plans were detailed. Because she actually completed all the teaching examples and the assigned questions in advance of the lesson, she was able to predict the possible difficulties that lie within the questions. Her excellent planning and preparation helped to keep the students engaged, as there was a high level of understanding and success among them. Ashley knew what possible questions the students would have and was completely capable of addressing them during the lesson and as the students worked on the assignment.
Ashley has a calm and gentle style. This demeanor along with her great preparation helps to create a calm and respectful classroom environment. Her daily routine was consistent. She started the class with engaging math puzzles and the students soon learned to come in, get out some paper and attempt to solve the puzzle. When students were off task she would walk to them and students understood this cue. A gentle reminder to stay on task and the students responded. At times laughs were traded but the end result would always be the student re-engaging to the task.
Ashleys instructional delivery is sound. Through her knowledge of content, pedagogy and skill in delivering instruction and her use of a variety of instructional strategies, she keeps the students engaged in learning. Her pacing of a lesson is very good. She allows time to clarify confusing concepts. She instructs the whole group, she pairs them up, she has students demonstrate on the SMART board and she constantly questions for understanding. Ashley gives quick feedback as well. Not only through her questioning techniques but also by having assessments marked, recorded and handed back the very next day. Students see their improvement as she instructs.
Ashley has a good understanding of what it means to be professional. Her attire is always appropriate, her language is never course and she treats others with respect. Ashley is very organized and keeps good records of the students progress. She has a good understanding of the Alberta Program of Studies and as she continues with her career she will continue to grow as a professional.
It is with pleasure that I send this letter of recommendation and it is my hope that Ashley is able to secure a position as a teacher in the near future.
Sincerely,
Gordon Dalke
