The Chief of Air Staff & Chairman Chief of Staff Committee, Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi, today laid

the
foundation stone at the proposed site for a New Aerospace Museum in Delhi today. The proposed site
of the new Aerospace Museum is near the Domestic terminus of IGI Airport.
The new Aerospace museum is meant not only to preserve the glorious tradition of the Indian Air Force
but also to create awareness in general public about Indias rich Aerospace heritage. The new Aerospace
museum is expected to be a major tourist attraction and a land mark in New Delhi.
The Indian Air Force presently has a museum located near the technical area of Air Force Station Palam.
To improve the presentation and to preserve the history for posterity it was proposed to develop a state
of the art museum designed with latest concepts and design. Representatives and consultants from
various world renowned museums including Salarjung and Victoria were consulted. The Indian Air
Force then decided to procure more space and to shift to a place more accessible by masses.
Spread over 43 acres the new Aerospace museum would have two main types of displays, indoor and
outdoor. The outdoor displays would have aircraft parked and hung in flying altitude with mural
depicting the era and atmosphere of its time of operation. The childrens area would also be created
where children could enter cockpits of display aircraft and familarise with aircraft control and
instruments. A video arcade would also be created.
Indoor displays would have a history section, section of aviation legends, history of IAF Squadrons,
major campaigns and battles fought by IAF, IAFs peace time role etc. The museum would also have a
souvenir shop.
