Julienne Pharis is applying for a DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship. She is currently taking a class that I teach in Immunology and is performing well academically. Her research is concerned with the characterization of a seleniumreducing bacterium from hot springs in southern Oregon.

I fully support Juliene Pharis’ application for a DOE Office of
Science Graduate Fellowship. I have known Julienne for approximately three years as both an undergraduate and graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University. She is currently taking a class that I teach in Immunology and is performing quite well academically. This is the only class that Julienne has taken from me as she has just begun her M.S. degree program in Microbiology. She seems to be very interested in learning as much as possible in Immunology/Microbiology since she has only a limited amount of experience in such classes in her previous degree program.
Julienne is also performing as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the
department involved in laboratory instruction in our Introductory Microbiology (BIOL 221L) course. She is performing very well in a professional and reliable manner. The students have commented that she is certainly enthusiastic in her teaching style in which the material is presented in a manner that stimulates their interest in the subject.
With regard to research, Julienne has been working in Dr. Tim
Magnuson’s laboratory for the past three years as a technician while completing her B.S. degree in Biology. The research experience that she has gained during this time is now going to contribute a great deal as she pursues graduate work. Julienne’s research is concerned with the characterization of a selenium- reducing bacterium from hot springs in southern Oregon.
I consider Julienne Pharis a very worthy candidate for an NSF
Fellowship and that she will contribute to Dr. Magnuson’s research as she progresses through her program. Thank you for your consideration of her application.
Sincerely, Gene M. Scalarone, Ph.D., Professor of Microbiology, Assistant Chair Undergraduate Programs, Department of Biological Sciences, Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID 83209-8007
