Rhetorical Analysis on : Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian by Laura Fraser

1 Author's purpose : The author's purpose is to explain the vegetarian people why he did not
eat meat before but right now she is no longer vegetarian. she try to explain even if she was
considered as a vegetarian she was not real vegetarian . she persuade the vegetarian people
by giving them sum evidence which make a non vegetarian
2. Audience : audience are vegetarian people because she give them reason of why she is no
longer vegetarian and also she give reasons why she was vegetarian before .she persuade
vegetarian people to not consider them negatively because even if she was vegetarian before
she was not a real vegetarians . she give example where she say " I eat daily products and eggs ,
as well as fish. That made me a pesco - ovo -lacto-vegetarian " .
second audience are English people : because she give his message in English. she write her
ideas in English.
3. Author: author is Laura Fraser American Journalist, Essayist , memoirist and travel writer.
she was born 1961 in Denver Colorado .Fraser was graduated from Wesleyan University in 1982
where he majored in American studies and was co-editors of the Wesleyan Argus.The authors
come to subject by explaining herself the reason why she was a vegetarian and right now she
was no longer vegetarian.
4. historical context : in this context it was a woman who try to give the reason why she was
no longer vegetarian . she try to give reason of why she was vegetarian before but now she is
no longer vegetarian . she also says even if she appeared as a vegetarian but in reality she was
not a really vegetarian . because all reason which make him a vegetarian was not serious for
example she says : she became a vegetarian because meat was very expensive . She also said
she became Vegetarian because of political pressure . she need to be considered as lesbian in
order to get help from the Federal at college
5.The authors are used Logos by giving claim or evidence of why she become vegetarian
where she says : where she say" I became vegetarian for two reasons : One was that meat was
more expensive than lentils, and I was broke, or broke enough to choose to spend my limited
budget on other classes of ingestible. The other was that I was not a lesbian " .
The authors appears as pathos where she says : I'd practically kill a cow for a great pair of
shoes.(she use pathos, emotion)
How the audience views the authors(Ethos) : the audience view the author as a person who
are not serious because all reasons she give us of being vegetarians are not very serious. The
audience views the author as a fake vegetarians, for example the author say she was not
eating meat during the last 15 years but it was the cause of political pressure, it was not for
her own decision which show that show not serious .

6. HOW does the language and style contribute to the purpose : the authors use formal
language. The writer use humor . for example she says I was pesco - ovo - lacto- Vegetarian.
or she use humors by saying : " I would practically kill a cow just for a great pair of shoes "
