The experience log is a detailed account of the levels and types of activities completed in the field. The candidates will objectively document their experiences. The log will have the following parts: time spent on experience, detailed description of experience, role played during experience, reflection on experience (what was learned during the experience), how experience impacts student learning, relationships among factors that impact student learning with references to current research literature, relationships built via the experience (when appropriate). This extensive log provides an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate best practices and make connections between current research issues and school-level practice. An entry into the experience log will be completed at the end of every day. The cooperating SLMS will have access to the final log and use it in addition to the final checklist to evaluate the internship.
Date Time Spent on Experience Description of Experience Role Played During Experience Learned from Experience Impact on Student Learning Relationship(s) Made to Current Ideas in Field 6/11 8-9am Intro Meeting Worked with supervisor to determine my role and go over the rubrics and supporting documents. Found that my needs should be met by the summer programing and she would be working with me to ensure all the rubric requirements are met. Students will be able to have a well- organized experience with both parties being prepared for the internship. Librarians promote student learning through technology, literacy, and collaboration with teachers.
(Dees, Dianne, et al. (2010)) 6/11 9-9:30 am Review the Library Media Handbook Saw what new and current librarians in Baltimore city are required to do and become acquainted with the citys library media programing. Found that there is a lot of customization allowed for schools. Different schools might be able to purchase different systems depending on their budget. However there are some systems in place to make sure that standardization happens. Students benefited when there is a well run district programing. This handbook was just developed last year and is to help new librarians get their feet wet and understand Library needs cohesive vision/mission and district support . (Donham,2008)
6/11 9:30-10:30 Update Library Spreadsheet Worked on the administrative side of things to catalog information. Was able to see that the librarys role far extends that of just a classroom teacher. Students benefit from a well- organized and cataloged library. As a program administrator media specialists are responsible for the management and evaluation of the collection. (Bishop,2007) 6/11 10:30-11:30 Gale Presentation A sales man from Gale came to market his new database. The librarian is a decision maker in the school and needs to develop relationships with vendors and stay current about new technology. Students need interactive resources that will be used in their classes and the library. Todays librarians are experts in integrating appropriate technology across all curriculum areas. (Barrata, 2011) 6/11 11:30-12:00 KOHA- Circulation Familiarized myself with the citys cataloging system. Learned about KOHA and how it is used in the district. An organized library benefits all stakeholder and students. Having a circulation system attributes to this. Circulations and promotions of collections are primary considerations in the management of collections. (Empowering Learners, 2009) 6/11 2-2:30 Tour of technology I got to see the laptops, nooks, ebooks, promethean board and other tools the library stores. I was able to see some of the practical tools that are used in this library. Students benefit when all parties understand the technology and how it can be used. School libraries should be "built by professionals who model leadership and best practices for the community to ensure that learners are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the technological society of the 2Ist century" (Johnston, 2014) 6/11 2:30-3:30 Conversation with librarian about current issues The librarian and I had time to talk about certification, being on the admin team and what leadership has looked like in the library. It was great to see how a librarian can be part of the leadership team and partner with the administration to help improve the school. As a result of a leader librarian students get to interact and see the librarian outside of the library space. The responsibility brings an ongoing commitment to the changing curriculum, innovative teaching, being knowledgeable of how students learn, embrace and understand the integration of technology and student learning (Empowering Learners, AASL, 2009) 6/12 8:00-9:00 Helped input Grades and talked with supervisor about new library construction I helped the librarian put grades into their gradebook. I got to see what grade system they used and how to work the online platform. Students are held accountable for the work they do with their librarian. For library media specialists to be true instructional partners they must be actively engaged in assessment with students. (Harada & Yoshina, 2010) 6/12 9:00-9:30 Student Conferences Students came to meet with the librarian about the books they created and corrections that needed to take place. I was able to listen to the conferences and use these as a model for my future classes. Students had one on one time with the librarian and were able to take ownership of their product. They understood what needed to be done in order to ensure their product became finished. Discussions with students during the inquiry process provides the student with critical assistance and feedback as he/she works through the process. (Langhorne & Rehmke, 2011) 6/12 9:30-11:15 Kindergarten Graduation We attended the kindergarten graduation. We were a part of the graduation and met with parents afterward about their students achievement. Students and their parents could see how involved the librarian is in their students lives. The library must be the heart of the school and the teacher- librarian must be a proactive team player (Brown,2004) 6/12 11:15-12:50 2 nd Grade Class Lesson on fairy tales with an accompanying audio book. I got to see the librarian teach a lesson and start to watch her management style. Students were able to get direct instruction from their librarian and access information about the structure of fairy tales. How we teach as librarians is as important as what we teach. (Small et. Al, 2012) 6/12 12:50-1:30 Lunch n/a n/a n/a n/a 6/12 1:30-3:00 Library Reorganization The new library is currently finishing construction. We put up shelving and started recataloging books that had incorrect labeling. I may have to go through library construction one day and this helped me prepare for that possible experience. Students will benefit from a well thought out and organized layout. Students need a library that has easily accessible and well organized materials. Students will come to the library more frequently when they know how to find the materials they need. (Hembree, 2013) 6/16 12:00-2:00 Destiny administration interface Helped remove books from Destiny which had been previously weeded. Destiny may be an interface I use in the future and it will be useful to know how to use. Students have an accurate picture of what is in the collection. The ultimate purpose of collection development is to make materials accessible to users. (Donham, 2008) 6/16 3:00-4:00 Destiny Administration Interface Helped remove books from Destiny which had been previously weeded. Destiny may be an interface I use in the future and it will be useful to know how to use. Students have an accurate picture of what is in the collection. (Blackiston, 2011) 6/18 8:00-8:45 Library Reorganization Cleaning up the library space. Making sure desks, and tables are in order. Also, we packed up the old computers so space for new computers could be made. An orderly library helps create an environment that fosters learning. It is a good idea to have general norms/procedures for library upkeep. Students need an environment that allows them to feel safe and foster learning. All the small daily tasks done in the background that contribute to the overall maintenance and outward credibility of the school library program. (Busch, 2011) 6/18 8:45-9:15 Met with principal The principal stopped by and I got to learn more about the school and the stakeholders that are a part of this building. Understanding the vision and mission of the principal and stakeholders is key to knowing how to create the vision and mission for the library. In order to backwards plan for student success we need to have a school wide idea of the mission and vision. School librarians must be seen as a leader. Leadership requires becoming an active member of the local global and learning community, the school librarian can build relationships with stakeholders to develop an effective school library. (Empowering Learners, AASL, 2009) 6/18 9:15-11:00 Weeding donated books from the shelves. Books had been donated in the past but had never been cataloged or labeled with a bar code. They had just been shelved randomly by a previous librarian. My goal was to start identifying and weeding these books. I learned how important it is to have policies and procedures for donations. We are still not finished trying to weed all of the uncatalogued donations from the shelves from a previous librarian. Students need an organized library with relevant materials. When uncatalogued books are randomly on the shelves it is hard to find the materials you need. The process of carefully weeding a media center to remove outdated materials is as important as selection. (Donham, 2008) 6/18 1:00 HVAC was broken today. Due to the extreme heat in the building we were dismissed at 1:00 6/19 8:00-9:00 Worked on bulletin board. Librarian had the materials to go onto the bulletin board and I put them up. Learned about the librarians bulletin boards and what she likes them to look like. Helped to create a vibrant and rich environment for student learning. It is crucial for library media specialists to advocate their services in a proactive way. (Plunkett, 2010) 6/19 9:00-10:00 Worked on the destiny system trying to find help/support documents. The librarian I am working with needs some support with the Destiny system so I tried to find documents that would aid with this online. I am becoming more familiar with Destiny and how to navigate it. Students are only able to have a positive experience with Destiny if the Librarian first knows how to work it. Libraries should have accessibility to students anytime and anywhere. Online catalogues can create this type of 24/7 access that is important for students. I first organized parts of the easy book section and then shelved materials I am becoming much more familiar with the books in the collection and the way books are organized in a library. Students benefit from a well- organized library where materials are easy to find. The best school library media collections is of little use unless the materials in the collection are promoted and circulated to students and teachers. (Bishop,2007) 6/19 2:00-3:30 Weeding the easy book section for donated materials Before the librarian had come community members and organizations had donated materials to the collection. These materials were never labeled or cataloged they were shelved with the rest of the I understand the enormity of the tasks that need to be done in a library. I also have realized how important an assistant or parent volunteer could be. My librarian would have much more time if there was an extra set of hands. Students are only able to know look up materials in the collection if they are cataloged. It is important for donated materials to be cataloged. The act of weeding in itself creates opportunities to learn the collection. Because online catalogs abound, it is comforting to use more of the senses collection. in working with resources. (Dickinson, 2005) 6/20 8:00-9:30 Withdrawing books from the collection I used the scanner to scan book barcodes and make an excel spread sheet of the books that we were withdrawing from the shelves. Then I used this document to withdraw the books from the collection. It was useful for me to have more practice using the scanner, excel and withdrawing books. Students need a relevant collection where a librarian has consciously thought about what materials are needed and what can be removed. Librarians need to follow the step by step procedures outlined in their manual or protocols for withdrawing materials from collection. (Bishop, 2007) 6/20 9:30-11:30 Boxing up withdrawn books I had to find boxes throughout the building. Then I used these boxes to start organizing the withdrawn books into a section of the library. I also called a few organizations to see if they would pick up our withdrawn books. As we make room in the collection for new materials we have to withdraw books from the current collection. It was important to follow proper protocol to withdraw the materials in the correct manner. This process helps create room for more relevant up to date materials that are important for students. Maintaining a collection is as important as developing it. Collection maintenance involves two major processes inventory and weeding. You should evaluate your labels and/or methods if students seem to be reluctant to engage with or find materials. (Hembree,2013) 6/20 1:30-2:45 Reorganizing books in the fiction section Since my library has not had an assistant many of the sections have gotten very disorganized. I started reorganizing the fiction section today. It was great practice for me to organize the collection and get to know the materials in the fiction section. Students need a fiction collection that is organized so they can find the materials that they need. The school library program ensures the collection is centralized and decentralized as needed to support classroom activities and other learning initiatives in the school. (Empowering Learners, AASL, 2009) 6/23 8:00-9:00 Organized Materials Helped organize the back cabinets where materials are held. Understanding the layout and structure for all the materials is very beneficial for me. In order to best meet students needs librarians need to be aware and organize all the materials they are able to. All the small daily tasks done in the background that contribute to the overall maintenance and outward credibility of the school library program. (Busch, 2011) 6/23 9:00-9:30 Selected read aloud book for first graders The librarian helped me select a book for the read aloud today. We went with Creepy Carrots. I loved getting to read a story aloud. Think about where to pause and what type of questions to ask. Getting all students engaged and understanding the story was my goal. Students need to become enthusiastic readers and a read aloud can be a great way to foster this. One of the hallmarks or coordination is that it goes beyond the instantaneous quality if cooperation. The advance planning allows consideration for the best way to meet students needs. (Bishop, 2007) 6/23 10:30-11:30 Read aloud with first grade students and story prediction I read aloud to the first grade students. Students then created predictions of what would happen next. I loved getting a chance to experiment with read alouds. Placing emphasis on different words, word definition and making predictions were all a part of our work. Students need exposure to current literature and opportunities to make text to text, text to world and text to self- connections.
Although the primary responsibility for addressing illiteracy lies with the classroom teacher, the library media specialist can play an important role in the supporting literacy development. (Harada & Yoshina, 2010) 6/23 12:30-1:30 Lunch 6/23 1:30-2:45 Readers advisory with various students - shelving materials I helped students find relevant materials and books they were interested in. When there was not any students to assist I started to shelve materials. I continue to learn how to conduct an appropriate readers advisory with students of multiple ages. The more practice I have the better! It is helpful for students to have someone who can guide them to books they may enjoy and help them find genres that they may never have thought of. Readers advisory is that age-old responsibility of the librarian to make the best effort to connect the right book to the right student at the right time. (Brodie, 2013) 6/24 8:00-9:00 Looked up reviews for books librarian is thinking of adding to the collection I used the internet to help librarian decide on new selections for her library. Great way for me to keep up to date on relevant childrens literature and young adult literature. Students want to see windows and mirrors into their lives. We need to make sure we keep our shelves stocked with relevant reads. Responsible collection development requires that broad consideration govern the
evaluation and choice of a single item. (Bishop,2007) 6/24 9:00-10:30 Check in/Check out books for various students I helped at the circulation desk checking materials in and out. Continue to familiarize myself with the destiny software and checking students in/out. Students are able to use the resources at the library effectively and get to reading when they have check out/ check in procedures they are aware of. Graders. Was able to learn how to introduce vocabulary, stop and ask meaningful questions and help students relate to the text. Students were able to learn new vocabulary and make connections between their lives and the text. The school library program promotes reading as a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. (Empowering Learners, AASL, 2009)

Continuing to learn how to best meet the needs of the students that I am serving. Students could find interesting and engaging texts that they relate to. Nurturing readers is a responsibility shared by teachers, parents, children and youth, the greater community and library media specialists. (Donham, 2008) 6/24 12:30-1:30 Lunch 6/24 1:30-2:30 Creating new library rules and procedures Helped mentor librarian create new rules for her renovated library space. Helped me brainstorm what my rules may be when I get my own space. Students need clear expectations about what to expect in their library space. The key to stress-free library time is classroom management proactively setting up a class to limit misbehavior. Students need an updated catalog that reflects the current collection. Many benefits come from weeding a collection including the creation of more space, ensuring accurate materials, avoiding the cost of maintaining unwanted items, and keeping a reputation as a source of reliable information. I learned about what New Librarian training is like for this district. focus and help students in their school. planning teams, the common purpose is to provide effective educational experiences (Donham, 2004) 7/1 11:00-12:00 Review rubric and expectations for my internship As I near the end of my internship we needed to go back over the rubric(s) to ensure that I have covered all of the areas. We made a plan for how to complete the remaining items. Good for me to ensure I have a complete and fulfilling experience. Ensuring a thorough training now will ensure I can best be prepared to enrich the lives of my future students. LMS works in collaboration with each staff member to evaluate job descriptions on a daily basis (AASL, Empowering Learners, 2009) 7/1 12:00-1:00 Lunch 7/1 1:00-2:45 Shelving Materials Shelved materials back into the sections. I continue my work with the learning the organization of a library and thinking of how I may want to organize my future library. An organized library is one where students can access information in the easiest manner. Curation: to gather, organize, and present resources in a way that meets information needs and interests, makes sense for virtual as well as physical resources. (Schiano 2013) 7/2 8:00-9:00 Organized craft materials I made sure crayons, construction paper etc., were labeled and placed appropriately in back storage. Continue to learn how important an organized library is. Students need an organized library and so do teachers. That way librarians can effectively communicate what materials they have and how to use those resources. All the small daily tasks done in the background that contribute to the overall maintenance and outward credibility of the school library program. (Busch, 2011) 7/2 9:00-10:00 Small group reading with 4/5 graders Worked with a group of 7/8 students with the book Dyamonde Daniel Got to help foster critical thinking and questioning strategies while helping struggling readers comprehend a text. Students are able to get differentiated instruction that meet their needs. The ambitious goal of graduating every student ready for college or a career will be reached only if we marshal all of our collective resources in a concerted effort to promote literacy. (Smith, Schiano, and Lattanzio, 2014)
7/2 11:00-12:00 Lunch 7/2 12:00-1:00 1 st Grade Lesson Taught my instructional project to the 1 st grade today. I was infusing ecosystems and writing into a lesson. Got to see how to plan and implement a lesson for 1 st grade and how to collaborate with other facilitator. Students can see how the curriculum is integrated across content areas and they were able to work on their reading/writing skills. When teachers and LMSs engage in coordinated instruction, all members of the school community benefit: teachers, LMSs, administrators, and students. (Buzzeo, 2008) 7/2 1:00-2:00 Bulletin board Worked to put together a bulletin board that reflects the summer reading program. Got to see the importance to students seeing themselves on the Bulletin Board and the key components of a Bulletin board. Students want a place where they can learn information and see their work that they have done. It give students a sense of accomplishment. One of the best ways to promote a media center collection is to have an eye catching bulletin board. ( Bishop, 2007) 7/2 2:00-2:45 Shelving Shelved previously check out materials. Continuing to familiarize myself with the way the books are organized and which books are located in which sections. Students are able to locate the materials they desire when they are placed appropriately back Curation: to gather, organize, and present resources in a way that meets information needs and interests, makes sense for virtual as well as physical resources. (Schiano 2013) 7/3 8:00-9:15 Library Prepwork Organizing shelves to make sure books are in the correct order. Looked for books that were misplaced or may have been in bad condition. I have seen the importance of finding library assistants so the main librarian can focus on instruction and collaboration. An organized library is one that promotes student learning and access to information. All the small daily tasks done in the background that contribute to the overall maintenance and outward credibility of the school library program. (Busch, 2011) 7/3 9:15-10:00 Readers Advisory Helped students find the appropriate materials and books that might be of interest to them. Important skill for me to develop as I begin my career in the library science field. Students are able to explore books that fit their needs and may expand their horizons of what books they like. Readers advisory is that age-old responsibility of the librarian to make the best effort to connect the right book to the right student at the right time. (Brodie, 2013) 7/3 10:00-11:00 Whole class read aloud with the text Green Eggs and Ham Helped facilitate the whole group read aloud and monitored a small table of 5-6 students during the activity. Great to work with a group and help facilitate a read aloud. Students benefit from a shared text and are able to use the pacing and phrasing of fellow students to model their own after. Nurturing readers is a responsibility shared by teachers, parents, children, and youth, the greater community and library media specialists. (Donham,2008) 7/3 11:00-12:15 Lunch 7/3 12:15-1:30 Outside presentation from the organization Blue Water Helped manage students for an outside presentation. Students learned about the pollution of water and what they can do to stop it. Got to see a great interactive science presentation and help me realize how vital partnerships are with outside organizations. Students furthered their understanding of water pollution and their environment. While school plays a central role in childrens development they benefit when there is interaction between the school and its community. (Donham, 2008) 7/3 1:30-3:00 Handed out thank you cards and said my goodbyes to staff. Went around to the staff members I had worked with to hand out thank you cards and say my Reinforced the importance of developing strong relationships with the staff in order to A well connected staff is one where collaboration is likely to happen and thus will The library media program can be a valuable asset to the teacher and
