VOLTAIC CELL DESIGN LAB HOW TEMPERATURE AFFECTS VOLTAGE

The objective of this lab is to see how temperature affects the voltage of the voltaic cell
made of magnesium and silver. The two equations and there electrode potential are as
follows:

()

()

()

()
Independent Variable: The Temperature
Dependent Variable: The voltage

Control Variables:
- The size and shape of the metals
- The volumes of the solutions (must be identical)
- The size of beakers used
- Different beakers are used for each different temperature to avoid inaccurate data
- Solution in salt bridge
- Data collection (use logger pro to obtain a graph of the voltage at room
temperature and warmer)

Materials:
- 2 beakers
- 1 piece of Ag
- 1 piece of Mg
- Logger Pro Voltage Probe
- Hot plate
- U-tube
- Paper towel
- Na2SO4

Procedure:
1. Pour 100 mL of Mg solution and 100mL of Ag solution into two separate beakers
2. Place them on a hot plate
3. Put solid Mg and Ag (identical in shape, size, mass, and surface area) into their
respective solutions
4. Fill the u-tube with Na2SO4 and plug the ends with paper towel, then place into
the two beakers of Mg and Ag solution
5. Connect wires to metals. Positive attached to anode metal (Mg) and negative
attached to cathode metal (Ag)
6. Turn voltage probe to right settings and record data using logger pro.
7. After obtaining a good flat line for room temperature, turn on hot plate and
observe voltage changes.
8. Repeat entire procedure for second trial, using clean equipment.
