Prairie Restoration Goals

The primary objective of the Abbey Lane prairie and

savannah project is to recover the former prairie
ecosystem on land that was converted for the
production of soybean crops.
This will provide hydrologic rehabilitation to the miller run
stream by reducing erosion, increasing infiltration, increase
soil organic matter and soil moisture storage, and also
decrease runoff.
This will allow us to reconstruct a sample of the original
landscape
This will allow us to instill Arnold Leopolds philosophy on
conservation

If even one-tenth of the lawns in a community were replaced by prairie
plantings, there would be a sizeable reduction in the use of water,
fertilizers, and chemical pesticides and in the fuel consumption, noise, and
air pollution associated with power mowers. In addition, deep prairie
roots condition the soul and improve rainwater penetration, reducing
runoff and recharging the water table- Virginia M Kline. The Tallgrass
Restoration Handbook: For Prairiers, Savannas, and Woodlands by William
R Jordan.

Provide public access to the restoration for
the purposes of education, scientific research,
and natural activities such as bird watching.
Promote dialogue on restoration and land
conservation among the community to engage
in the process
