Francisca Reyes Aquino is considered the pioneer of folk dancing in the Philippines. In the 1920s, she traveled to remote villages in Central and Northern Luzon to research unrecorded forms of local celebrations, rituals, and sports. This research resulted in her 1926 thesis titled "Philippine Folk Dances and Games." In 1954, she received the Republic Award of Merit from President Ramon Magsaysay for her outstanding contributions to advancing Filipino culture. She authored several books on Philippine folk dances between 1946-1951 that documented her findings.

Dance Pioneer. This Bulakea began her research on folk dances in the 1920's making trips to remote barrios in Central and Northern Luzon.

In 1954, she received the Republic Award of Merit given by the late Pres. Ramon Magsaysay for "outstanding contribution toward the advancement of Filipino culture", one among the many awards and recognition given to her.
