3 rd Grade Unit Study on Exercise Students will verbalize and demonstrate the different kinds of and the benefits of exercise. Adaptation for students is given as needed. Unit will cover approximately 4 period sessions. Pre-Assessment: Students will demonstrate existing knowledge of the subject matter with a pre- test/quiz via I-clickers so that an overview of classroom needs can be determined. In this way, I can reinforce the areas that are in most need of improvement. Post-Assessment: Students will be evaluated again on the previous quiz questions, by both I- clicker and with pen and paper for individual accountability. Students will also develop Weekly Exercise Plans as performance indicators of applied knowledge. Formative Assessment: Questions will be asked of students as the lesson unit progresses in order to determine student understanding and to reinforce the answers for the classroom while providing continuing support. Student creation of exercise-based Mind Maps will help to solidify knowledge in a concrete way and will reveal areas in need of more reinforcement. Student demonstrations of mystery exercises will serve as a formative assessment as well in order to gauge learning. Analyze student performance relative to the learning goals: According to the results of my pre-assessment quiz via anonymous I-clicker input from the students, I can determine what areas of my lesson require the most reinforcement to meet the classrooms needs. Mind Maps of the information will be completed as the students learn the module information. After the unit study is complete, I will quiz the class again with the same questions to confirm knowledge and to chart classroom progress, which will be done both with an I-clicker and with pen and paper for individual accountability. Sample results are shown below. Student weekly exercise plans will be critiqued for understanding of concepts. Towards the end of the unit, I can poll the students with the I-clicker to see which activity is their favorite aerobic exercise from a poll on the KidsHealth website. Students will also demonstrate examples of exercises for the class to guess the category of the mystery exercise. The hope is that engagement and a positive attitude are developed with a fun, kinesthetic activity. Refer to the following table and figures: 2
