Modeling a Procedure
Guidelines for Opening a Class Session
Explain:

State the procedure: Good morning, 3
rd
graders, today, we will be learning the proper way to
open a class session. This is important procedure will help us transition easier between classes.

Generate rationale:
How might learning this procedure benefit 3
rd
graders?
o This process assists students in developing good structure and discipline.
Why would it be a good rule to get in the habit of following this procedure?
o It makes it easier for the students to know what is on their agenda for the day.

Explain and model the procedure:
Teacher greets the class and directs their attention to him/her.
Teacher will check for students understanding of prior learning (lesson).
Students will check the board for predictable organize exercise i.e. journals, Daily
Oral Learning (DOL) or Bell Ringers.
Students will complete an introductory or warm up activity. If a game is used the
rules of the game will be clearly explained before starting the game.
Teacher will introduce the agenda and expectations for learning.

Check for Understanding:
What is the first thing the teacher does to open a class or session?
What will students check for on the board?
What do we do next?
What does the agenda tells us?
What does the teacher expect you to do?

Rehearse
Teacher will demonstrate how this process is done using todays guidelines and
agenda.
Teacher divides class in four even groups. Groups and topics will be identified.
Each group will be given one topic from the agenda to work on as a group. However,
each student from each group will present a segment of their assigned topic.
All groups will be given five minutes to collaborate and complete their group
project. Additional, 3-5 minutes will be given for each group presentation.

Reinforce
After each presentation, feedback will be given by teacher and students. Further
practice will be done with students in upcoming classes.


Remember: students remember that everyone may not recall all these steps in order right
now. Everything you need will be on the slideshow to help you follow along. Please have
patience and we will get through this like real champions.

Guidelines for Closing a Class or Session
Explain:

State the procedure: Good day, 3
rd
graders, today, we will be learning the proper way to
close a class session. This is important procedure will help us transition easier between
classes.

Generate rationale:
How might learning this procedure benefit 3
rd
graders?
o This process assists students in developing good structure and discipline.
Why would it be a good rule to get in the habit of following this procedure?
o It is a good tool for teachers to gage students understanding of the lesson
covered.

Explain and model the procedure:
Teacher greets the class and directs their attention to him/her.
Teacher states the objective of closure discussing the reasons for the review.
Teacher checks for clear understanding of objectives. Give clear rules for games
before proceeding with games.
Teacher informs class of future learning objectives.
Students will straighten up the classroom before dismissal.
Students prepare for dismissal. The Bell does not dismiss you. I will when class is
clean.

Check for Understanding:
1. Why do you think a review of the lesson is done?
2. What did you learn from the activity?
3. Did the activity help you to understand the lesson better? Support your answer
4. What will we be learning about next?

Teacher will demonstrate how this process is done using todays agenda.
Students will be divided into four even groups.
Each group and topic will be identified.
Groups will collaborate and work on topic. Each group member will individually
present a specific part of their assigned topic.
All groups will have 5 minutes to complete their task and an additional 5 minutes
for presentation of their work.
