No country should

interfere or intervene
in the affairs of
another country.
Planning Exercise for General Paper Essay
(1) There could be a RESPONSIBILITY to interfere.
- The relationship that a country has with another
could affect how involved it should be in the other
countrys affairs
-The greater the ability/capacity, the greater the
responsibility to interfere
-All countries have a duty to their own people, and
must consider the impact of their intervention on
national interests
(2) Interfering is the RIGHT THING TO DO especially if
the action preserves (3) HUMAN RIGHTS
CLARIFY : What do we mean by should ?
- DIRECT
- military action, provision of aid
- INDIRECT
- mediation, sanctions, express views or lobby (in
support or opposition), media wars, appeal to
international law
CLARIFY :
What do we mean by interfere or
intervene?
Possible Points (1)
Those who say that countries should not get
involved use these arguments :
1. Mind your own business. Do not undermine the
sovereignty of our state.
2. External involvement with ulterior motives leads
to problems for the country whose affairs are
being interfered with.
Possible Points (2)
On the other hand, there are circumstances
when other countries should get involved :
1. When they have the capacity to help, they have
a greater obligation to do so.
2. When a country contributes to the problem that
another country faces, then the former should
interfere to be part of the solution.

Possible Points (3)
On the other hand, there are circumstances
when other countries should get involved :
3. When aid is required in times of disaster or
humanitarian crisis, intervention is the right
thing to do
4. To prevent a domestic issue or an issue between
2 countries from escalating to impact a greater
region or the world

Possible Points (4)
Intervention and the extent of intervention also
depend on...
1. The impact on national interests
There should ideally be the potential for a win-win
situation for both the country that interferes and
the country whose affairs are interfered with
2. A very strong moral imperative (like preserving
human rights and equality) means that other
countries should intervene, in whatever capacity they
can, because all countries are part of a global
community , and humanity should be at the top of
everyones priorities.

Thesis Statement
The assertion that no country should
intervene in the affairs of another
country is not defensible because
there are specific compelling
circumstances that make foreign
interference necessary.
