PCOI4LEXTvNT47HB3V33Fg/edit?usp=sharing
In Critical Thinking Bell talks about the importance of critical thinking. She mentions
how children learn to question things at such an early age ; they are natural critical
thinkers. However that changes overtime when they are discouraged from giving their
own opinion. Childrens passion for thinking often ends when they encounter a world
that seeks to educate them for conformity and obedience only they are taught that
thinking is dangerous. Then by the time they are in college they feel unsafe thinking for
themselves. Some professors may encourage thinking for themselves but others might not
which stops them from participating in class. The best part about critical thinking is that it
encourages you to participate and learn more.
Horn, Heather. Stop Close Reading. The Atlantic. The Atlantic Monthly Group.
1July 2010. Web. 30 June 2014.
Heather Horn contradicts Proses view on close reading. Horm believes that close reading
is boring for some students. It discourages students from reading, having to analyze each
word one at a time is time consuming and boring. Reading one chapter a week slows
them down instead of reading 15 books a year they are only reading 5. Students should
feel excited when it comes to reading and be able to see what kind of books they like. I
agree with Horn close reading is sometimes boring and discourages people from reading.
She states that the goals of an English class should be to introduce students to language
and great literature.
