Achievement Levels

Key Messages:
Achievement level indicators are used as a common framework to assess student work at the outcome level.
Achievement Levels are used to describe the level of achievement with an outcome/or outcomes.
Achievement levels focus on the depth of knowledge and understanding and the extent of the application of the outcome.
The use of achievement levels allows teachers to view trends over time relating to students individual progress of curriculum outcomes.
Students may use the information to help them understand what they are doing well and what they can do to improve.

How do students know
what the targets are?

Various assessment tools are used as
per curricular guide.
For example:
Assessments Final Grade

Level 4: In-depth knowledge and
understanding of content and concepts.
Able to extend the application of
related skills.

Level 3: Competent knowledge and
understanding of content and concepts.
Appropriate application of the related
skills.

Level 2: Developing knowledge and
understanding of content and concepts.
Developing in the application of the
related skills.

Level 1: Limited knowledge and
understanding of content and concepts.
Limited application of related skills.

Teachers tell, show and or
co-construct criteria to
communicate what the
target is.
These achievement levels
are further supported with
the use of exemplars to help
students understand what
success looks like.
This practice is best done in
a collaborative manner with
teachers of a common
curricular focus.
