Generalist Nursing Practice

Cassaundra Braden

This refers to giving holistic care to meet all the needs of the patient. In order to meet
these needs a nurse must assess the environment at assure that the patient has all available
resources and is being provided with the best and safest possible care. I work in progressive and
intensive care and I'm responsible for critical patients with diverse needs rather than a small
group of patients with one common issue. This means that to provide the patient with the highest
quality of care I must determine that they have everything they may need available to them. This
BSN program has instilled the need to thoroughly assure that each unique patient receives
holistic care that fits their distinct needs. Prior to my BSN I had focused my patient care on a
diagnosis base. I learned through the assignments and content the importance of treating the
patient not the condition.
My paper on the elderly as a vulnerable population allowed me to focus on the issues
surrounding this population such as high readmission rates due to early discharges without
providing every available resource. When I wrote this paper I was working in different long
term care facilities through my staffing agency. Through researching the different variables
affecting the elderly, I was made more aware of this aging population and their need for increase
resources and a higher need for evaluations prior to discharge. This assignment helped me to
focus on all the needs of the elderly patient and the necessity of providing them with holistic care
because of how vulnerable they are to health disparities.
