The birth of the Jumadath-thaniah 1430 crescent will take place on Sunday 24 May
2009 at 12:11 UT/GMT. In Pakistan, the time will be 18:11 (UT+6) and in Saudi Arabia, it
will be 15:11. The areas in which the birth of the crescent will take place after sunset or the
moon will set before the sun are these: Newzeland, Australia, Japan, China, Bangladesh,
most areas of India & Russia, southern part of the both continent Africa & North America. In
the rest of the inhabited world the crescent will be present in the horizon after sunset, but
its conditions will be extremely defective. In the western-most areas of Pakistan (Jivani
e.g.) the age of the crescent will merely be 2 hours 24 minutes at the time of sunset. In the
western-most areas of Saudi Arabia (Makkah Mukarramah e.g.) the age of the crescent will
only be 3 hours 45 minutes. In the Far West, (in San Diego, e.g.) at the time of sunset,
although the age of the moon will be only 14 hours 36 minutes & phase will be just 0.66 %
but due to the high northern declination of the moon, as some conditions of the moon are
comparatively better e.g. Lag will be 47 minutes, altitude 7.5 degrees, Elongation 8.3
degrees therefore Bernard Yallop (Britain), founder of world wide moon sighting committee
(WMC) Khalid Shaukat (U.S.A), founder of ICOP Shaukat Odeh (Jordan), Dr. Ilyas
(Malaysia) & SAAO have predicted a slim chance of moon sighting by naked eyes in
western-most areas of Canada and USA. Meanwhile, Dr. Omar Afzal, the Chairman of CFCO
[a committee of Astronomers in USA, established since 1978, among whose members are
Dr. Syed Kamal Abdali, Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Dr. Rauf Imam, Charles Evans (Abu Bakr) etc.]
has predicted no chance of sighting in Canada & USA on 24 May. Thus in view of the
extremely defective conditions of the crescent, the Astronomy Department of Jamia’-tur-
Rasheed, in consonance with more than eighteen ancient and modern criteria of sighting the
moon, predicts that excluding the western-most regions of Canada & USA, there is no
possibility at all of sighting the crescent moon with the naked eye in the rest of the
inhabited world especially in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Saudi
Arabia.
According to all the available criteria there is no possibility of sighting the crescent
with the naked eye in southern part of Australia, New Zealand and the southern-most tip of
the South American continent. As there is an excellent symmetry between the numerous
factors affecting the visibility, (for example, the age of the crescent, Lag, Relative Azimuth
and Elongation etc.) there is a clear possibility of sighting the crescent, according to one
criteria or another, in all the inhabited world lying between 60 degrees North and South
Latitude, except in the areas mentioned above.
Conditions of the crescent in Karachi on Monday 25 May 2009:
Phase =1.8 %
In the light of the details mentioned above it is evident that according to all the
criteria, there is an extremely clear possibility of sighting the crescent with the naked eye in
Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Iran etc. on Monday 25 May 2009. Thus 1st Jumadath-
thaniah 1430 will fall on Tuesday 26 May 2009 in these countries, Inshaallah.
Note: Every month, an up-dated report on the possibility of sighting the moon of the new
Islamic month can be downloaded in three languages …… English, Urdu and Arabic, from the
following website along with important maps and pictures:
