The primary focus for this semester of Senior English will be to help students with the reading, thining,
and writing processes associated with academic discourse in preparation for !ollege "reshman English.
#hile there are a $ariety of ways to approach the writing process, we will focus on mainly e%pository
style writing. &n doing so, students will be gi$en the opportunity to e%plore and loo at a particular
topic's( of interest through the lenses of $arious e%pository writing styles and techni)ues.

The course is designed to teach students to write a $ariety of essays dealing with the study of literature.
The student is encouraged to engage the instructor in dialogue and discussion as the information is
presented. *s a student in$ol$ed in this course of learning, you should be able to:
+. Draft and re$ise E%pository essays for reflecti$e analysis, sound argumentation, and clear
organi,ation.
-. Draft and re$ise paragraphs in terms of focus, de$elopment, and coherence.
.. #rite and edit sentences for correct grammar, punctuation, and usage.
/. 0ractice drafting and writing e%pository style essays for clarity and content.
1. 2e e%posed to a wide range of e%pository writings.
The course in$ol$es a series of interacti$e lectures, discussions, and group worshops. The student is
encouraged to engage the instructor $ia )uestions and comments. 2ecause of the nature of the content of
this course and the $olume of the material to be co$ered, it is necessary for students to participate in all
class sessions.

The instructor will pro$ide handouts to supplement the reading. Those times are noted on the syllabus.
Required Reading
Students will be doing the reading assignments both inside and outside of class3 howe$er, the instructor
will let students now when those times will occur. 'HI'&: 4ae sure you reali,e that the reading
assignments are due on the date/session listed on the syllabus and, therefore, need to be read before that
particular date/session.(

Late Assignments
0ersonal time management is as much a re)uisite sill for life as is the mastery of course content.
Therefore, assignments are due in class on the date indicated in the !ourse Schedule. Assignments not
s-.mitte/ in class are onsi/ere/ late an/ earn an automatic extension penalty of 25% . ;ate
assignments are then due no later than the final course session, no exceptions.

*ny time a student is absent, he/she will be e%pected to mae<up all missed wor. #hene$er a student is
absent from class that absence will fall under one of three categories:
Excused Absences:
*n e%cused absence as outlined by the Student =andboo will result in +556 credit for all mae<up wor
completed within the allotted time frame, which is upon return the class.
Unexcused Absences:
8ne%cused absences as outlined by the Student =andboo will result in 156 credit for all mae<up wor
completed within the allotted time frame

*n une%cused absence with parental permission as outlined by the Student =andboo will result in +556

Excessi$e Absences:
Seven absences per semester will be considered excessive. See the Student Handbook or penalties
related to excessive absences.

"our tardies per semester in the same class will be considered e%cessi$e. The fourth tardy will constitute
one une%cused absence.

Students and faculty are to show appropriate respect for each other e$en when di$ergent $iewpoints are
e%pressed in the classroom. Such respect does not re)uire agreement with or acceptance of di$ergent
$iewpoints.
#lagiarism and ("eating
Students who pass off ideas or words of another person as their own without crediting the source are
guilty of intellectual theft or literary theft better nown as plagiarism. Students who conduct any part of
their participation in the course in a fraudulent or decepti$e manner are guilty of cheating. Students
caught in either of these acts of academic misconduct will be reported to the Dean of Students, resulting
in disciplinary action up to and including failing the course and academic dismissal.

&n order to ensure full class participation, any student with a disabling condition re)uiring special
accommodations 'e.g., tape recorders, special adapti$e e)uipment, special note<taing or test taing
needs( is strongly encouraged to contact the instructor at the beginning of the course.

The final grade will be based on the total accumulations of points as indicated under !earning "ctivities
and "ssessments con$erted into a percentage. The following grading scale will be used to assign the final
letter grade:
