WORK/STUDY HABITS
One of the main emphasis in fifth grade is to encourage your
child to develop excellent work/study habits and skills. We
expect all fifth graders to be responsible for following
directions, completing assignments on time, brining supplies
(pens, pencils, paper, map pencils, etc.) to class each day.
HOMEWORK POLICY
Students will have ample time in class to begin and complete their
class assignment; however, if you are unable to finish the work during
the allotted time, he/she will be asked to take it home for homework.
There will be occasions for your child to spend extra time at home to
prepare for vocabulary, quizzes, tests and/or projects. All homework
assignments and upcoming tests will be listed on the board and a
message will be sent through Remind.
REMIND
We use a text based system that allows teachers to communicate with parents using text
messages. It allows teachers to send messages about homework, tests, projects, closings, etc.
If your parent would like to join our Remind system, you will need to text each code to the
corresponding phone numbers. Each of us have a number for our specific class.

MAKE-UP WORK
Students are responsible for getting their makeup work form their teacher. If
you are absent, we will be happy to send home your assignments. Your parent
may request your work by calling the office no later than 11:00 am on the day
of the absence, because teachers may not have an opportunity to check emails
until the end of the school day. Students are allowed the number of days
missed plus one day to complete and turn in makeup work. Example: If you
are absent two days, he/she has three days from the time he/she returns to
school to complete and turn in assignments.
GRADING
Grades will be taken on daily work, journal grades, quizzes,
projects, vocabulary and unit tests. Any incomplete work or
missing assignments will be entered into the grade book as a 0
until it is turned in.
NO EXTRA CREDIT
No extra credit assignments will be given in
class. Teachers encourage you to turn in
ALL work and to take your time and
complete each assignment correctly the first
time.
ELAR
Teaching literacy through genre studies is a way to expose students to a
variety of forms of literature (Amanda Madden) Each six weeks we
will embark on a journey through the genres. Taking on academic
vocabulary and applying it to different forms. This will give you a
versatile outlook on reading and help tremendously on the STAAR test.
Every Friday, your will be taking an accumulative vocabulary test. I
encourage you to study each word and their meanings. You can access
this list on my blog.
