SEPARATISTS
Puritans were people
trying to purify the Church
of England from within
the Church of England.
Separatists were people
who had the same beliefs
as the Puritans, but
wanted to just start new
churches.
MOVING TO NEW ENGLAND
Puritans and Separatists
eventually moved to New
England to have the
religious freedom that
they wanted.
They were then called
Pilgrims.

JOHN WINTHROP
Was a leader of the
Puritans and the first
governor of the
Massachusetts Bay
Colony (MBC).
Did not believe in religious
toleration.
It was either the Puritan
way or NO way.

ROGER WILLIAMS
Was a Puritan minister
(he was a separatist).
Williams was kicked out
of the MBC and
founded Providence,
Rhode Island (RI).
ROGER WILLIAMS
He believed in religious
tolerance (providing a
place for religious
minorities)
Separation of church
and state
Good relations with NA
ANNE HUTCHINSON
Started a bible study inside
her house.
She was kicked out of MBC
because of her spiritual
teachings and moved to
Providence, RI.
Believed in religious
freedom
Killed in a raid by NA

SALEM WITCH TRAILS
1692: Colonists began to
think that they had
witches among them.
Hung 19 suspected
witches.
IMPORTANCE Shows
what happens when fear
and paranoia overtake a
community.

KING PHILIPS WAR
Rebellion led by NA Chief
Metacom (Thanksgiving).
NA fought the colonists
and ended with 3,000 NA
and 1,000 English dead.
After this the relations with
the NA and English
colonists was mainly
terrible.
