ADA 1OI: Drama, Grade 9 Open Level

Course Description
This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using
material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elements of drama to examine
situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will create, perform, discuss, and analyse drama,
and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world
around them. (The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10, The Arts)

Big Ideas
By the end of this course, you will be able to show that you thoroughly understand and proficiently apply
the following concepts:
Drama performance requires the understanding of concepts and terminology, and purposeful and
creative application of those skills in performance.
Using a variety of performance techniques, drama conventions, and technological tools will enhance
performances.
An effective performance has an impact on the audiences understanding of the message.
Drama performance involves a series of deliberate choices by performers applying the concepts
learned in the unit to convey their intended message to a specific audience.
Being part of a drama community means reflecting upon your own performance and responding
thoughtfully to the performances of others, with the goal of providing constructive feedback to
improve everyones level of performance.

Essential Course Components
Completion of all essential course components is critical to ensure success in this course.

To be successful in this course you must be able to demonstrate the following skills and understandings:
1. Demonstrate effective use of the creative process Demonstrated through performances and
written assignments throughout the semester and summative performance and written work
2. Demonstrate effective critical analysis Demonstrated through participation in in-class peer
adjudication, submission of written adjudication, and self-evaluation of performances and in-class
work, and written reflections
3. Demonstrate a strong knowledge of key course terms and ideas Demonstrated through
completion of written assignments, tests, and quizzes, as well as application of the terms and ideas
in rehearsal and performance
4. Demonstrate an understanding of safe, ethical, and responsible personal and interpersonal
practices Demonstrated through rehearsal and performance throughout the semester, as well as
summative rehearsal and performance
Assessment & Evaluation
Student work will be evaluated using a balance of the Ministrys four achievement chart categories:
knowledge & understanding, thinking & inquiry, application, and communication.

Throughout the course teachers will gather evidence of student learning of the Big Ideas through
observations, conversations, and student-produced work. Students will have multiple opportunities to
demonstrate understanding of each essential course component.
