A compromise means each

side gives a little in order to
solve a problem. We have
all done this at times. When
do you think it is useful to
compromise? When have
you compromised?
Homework:
 How far are you
willing to
compromise? Are
you usually willing
to meet people half
way?
 When might you be
willing to meet
someone more
than halfway?
Slavery and the Constitution
 Ask people how the
Constitution
addresses slavery
and most people
won’t know
 The answer is – the
Constitution doesn’t
say a lot about
slavery, but it does
say a few things
Fugitive Slave Clause
 If a slave ran from
a slave state to a
free state they had
to be returned
 One state cannot
forbid the return of
runaway slaves
 Later codes were
much stronger
The 3/5 Compromise:
 Should slaves be
counted as people
for the purpose of
taxes?
 Should slaves be
counted as people
for the purpose of
determining
representation?
 Compromise – 3/5

Slave trade
 After 1808 the
slave trade would
end
 The slave ships
were just too
inhumane to be
allowed to
continue
 Britain ended the
slave trade as
well
Abolition of slavery in the
North
 A gradual process
 Massachusetts,
Vermont and New
Hampshire ended
slavery
 Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, New York,
Connecticut and
Rhode Island
ended slavery
Gradually
Internal slave trade
 Sale of “used”
slaves
 Sale of the children
of slaves
 Northern slaves
sold south
 Slaves from
Maryland Virginia
and Delaware sold
to the deep south
The Northwest Ordinance
 There was a great
deal of territory that
was not yet a state
 Should slavery be
allowed?
 First decision was the
Northwest Territories
and the decision was
no to slavery
