One Paragraph And The Thesis Revision
Thesis: Sherlock inherits the classic convention about John Watson, and Elementary
changes the conventions.
Many Sherlock Holmes lovers are very pleased to see that the BBC Sherlock series
follows lots of the obvious characteristics and good personalities that John Watson has. As Brian
Chapman claims in his article "10 Reasons Why Elementary is Better than Sherlock," He had
the limp, the background in Afghanistan; he was basically a very well rounded character with as
many quirks as Sherlock had. The BBC version of John Watson (played by Martin Freeman)
keeps the background of Sherlock Holmes, and this information is presented to the audiences in
Season 1, Episode 1. When the film starts, the very first scene uses a superimposition to explain
to the audience that the war has a very deep influence on him when he is sleeping. The images of
the war and the images that features on his face while sleeping overlap on the same screen. Dr.
Watson is turning his head around that he is having a nightmare till he wakes up from his dream
and falls into sorrow. After Dr. Watson is awake, the low key light on Dr. Watsons face
perfectly explains that Dr. Watson is struggling and he is in stress. When the camera moves on
the tracking shot from a feature of Dr. Watsons face to a general look of the room, it is not hard
to notice a cane leaning by the table. The scene changes and focuses on a coffee mug from eye
level, which has a badge that has In Arduis Fidelis, which is the motto of Royal Army Medical
Corps and implies that Watson just come back from the war. However, when the scene changes

again, the camera focuses on a screen of a computer showing Watsons empty blog. The doctor
on the next scene explains to Dr. Watson that he can only be cured by written everything that
happened to him out. In the first two minutes, the film introduces the background of Watson and
suggests that John Watson is going to change after he meets Sherlock Holmes. Just like the
novel, the setting of John Watson still remains the same that he is a soldier and doctor who just
came back from the war. Watson is a man with a strong heart, even though he is suffering from
the pain left from the war. And because of his pain, confusions and worries, he came back to
England. He records things that happen in his life, which leaves a clue that he will write down
the adventures he had with Sherlock Holmes. The film is just like the novelthey both start with
introducing Watson. A soldier, who has rich experiences and strong will but also weak parts,
needs to cure and decided to come back to England and become a doctor. The first two minutes
of the films also directly show to the audiences that the story happens in modern society and
suggests that the qualities of Watson in the Sherlock Holmes still remains in BBCs Sherlock,
even if the setting of John Watson nearly changed compared to the original masterpiece Sherlock
Holmes. Therefore, the stories are old, but the events are fresh. The classis conventions are
followed in modern films.
