Egyptian Hieroglyphs

In Egyptian culture the mark that one

was in the administrative (upper) class was
literacy. In the beginning of the Early Dynasty
Period in Egypt, a writing system of
hieroglyphics developed. These hieroglyphics
used picture symbols to represent words,
syllables, or individual sounds. Moreover, the
hieroglyphics writing continued throughout the
Egyptian civilization to be used on monuments
and ornamental inscriptions. Hieroglyphics not
only served for records in administration, but it
also was used for many other purposes as well.
The Egyptian literature included everything
from stories of adventure, magic, love poetry,
religious hymns, and instructive manuals on
technical subjects. Hieroglyphs were either
written in stone like the pictures on the side or
written in ink on a writing material made from
the papyrus reed. The papyrus reed only grew
in Egypt but was continuously in demand
throughout both the ancient world and was
exported in massive quantities.
