Health 8 Course Outline

2014 - 2015

HEALTH 8 is made up of three main components. Students will learn skills in
each of the three components that will allow them to improve their lives
physically, emotionally and spiritually. These components include:



1. WELLNESS CHOICES

Personal Health
Students will make responsible and informed choices to maintain
health.

Safety and Responsibility
Students will make responsible and informed choices to maintain and
to promote safety for themselves and others
God gives us the gift of health; we are called to care for and respect
this precious gift




2. RELATIONSHIP CHOICES

Understanding and Expressing Feelings
Describe characteristics of persistent negative feelings
Describe signs associated with suicidal behavior, and identify
interventiontional strategies

Interactions
Healthy relationships, ethics, peaceful relationships

Group Roles and Processes
Describe and explain the negative aspects of conformity and dissent
as it relates to individuals in a group, team
Describe the characteristics of an effective leader
3. LEARNING CHOICES

Learning Strategies
Time management, skills , strategies, use of time, personal balance,
family, school, leisure time

Life Roles/Career Development
Personal portfolio
Investigate, interpret and evaluate career info

Service and Volunteerism
Analyze the potential impact of volunteerism on career opportunities
Investigate personal safety procedures for working as a volunteer

4. CAREER PLAN
Lesson 1 Planning your career
Lesson 2 Taking the first step
Lesson 3 Know your skills

EXPECTATIONS
The students will:
1. Take personal responsibility in getting assignments completed and handed in on
time.
2. Strive to do the best job possible and to learn from past experiences.
3. Share ideas and accomplishments with classmates in a spirit of co-operation,
tolerance and enthusiasm.
4. Keep a tidy binder containing work and any handouts.
5. Bring all supplies to class and be ready to begin the class when the bell rings.
6. Comply with all school rules.
7. Be responsible to catch up on any work missed if absent from school. Assignments
will be stored in a homework file on the back counter. It is the responsibility
of the student to retrieve these assignments in the event of being absent.

Term 2: Dec 8- March 20
Term 3: March 23- J une 30


Honour Roll: Students who achieve an overall average of 80% or higher in their
core subject areas with no mark under 70%, will become members
of the schools honour roll. Students who achieve an overall
average of 90% or higher in their core subject areas with no mark
under 80%, will receive honours with distinction.

*Honour roll will be calculated for French I mmersion students
using their HI GHEST language mark. The other language must
still fall within the above stated criteria.
