Course Overview: Math 6 instructional time will focus on four critical areas: 1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; 2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; 3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and 4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.
Grading System :
Category Percentage of Grade
Grading Scale
90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D 0-59% F Tests 50% Quizzes 15% Class Assignments/Homework 20% Projects 15%
**View grades at www.jupitergrades.net**
Suggested Materials: 1. College Rule Notebook Paper 2. Pencils w/ Erasers (always have at least two pencils in class) 3. 1 Red Pen (used for correcting purposes) 4. 1 Pack of Colored Pencils (an 8 to 12 pack should be plenty) 5. 1 Pencil Sharpener (with a cover to hold pencil shavings)
Assessments: Students will be assessed regularly through lesson quizzes, performance tasks, unit tests, and district benchmarks. Since tests are heavily weighted at 50% of the course grade, students may retake any test to earn a higher grade. Students are responsible for scheduling retake appointments before the given deadlines and must complete an error analysis worksheet. Deadlines will be issued after each test.
Homework/Assignments: In-class assignments and homework will be assigned daily. Homework is due the following day at the beginning of the period. Students are responsible for writing HW assignments in his/her agenda and completing all assigned problems in pencil (pen will not be accepted). Students must SHOW WORK in order to receive credit. One point will be deducted if the assignment does not include the students first and last name, subject/teacher, period, and date on the top right corner. Make-Up Policy: Students who do not complete homework will attend the after school ZAP program and will call home to explain. Students will continue to attend ZAP until the assignment is received. All late assignments will be accepted for half credit.
Absences: Students are responsible for obtaining and completing any missed work if he/she is absent. Students will be given the same number of days he/she was absent to make-up any missed work without penalty.
Classroom Rules (Warner ROCKS): 1. Be respectful: follow directions, ask permission to speak/get up, encourage success 2. Be organized: on time with necessary materials, and complete all assignments. 3. Be a good citizen: stay on task, participate, listen, practice academic honesty 4. Be knowledgeable: ask on-topic questions, work to learn, make positive contributions that benefit others 5. Be safe: keep self to self, walk, use inside voices, use equipment as intended
Keys to Success: 1. Follow the 8 mathematical practices: 1) make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; 2) reason abstractly and quantitatively; 3) construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others; 4) model with mathematics; 5) use appropriate tools strategically; 6) attend to precision; 7) look for and make sense of structure; 8) look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning 2. Involve yourself in active learning. Participation is key! 3. Avoid saying I cant. Try your best, seek help when needed, and dont give up! 4. Complete all assignments thoughtfully and thoroughly. 5. Monitor your grades on www.jupitergrades.net and complete any missing work.
