Date/Time: 28.08.2014 11:15am Lesson Focus: Performance Enhancing Drugs Background Information: Over the year the entire class have covered various aspects of Health. These aspects include; coping socially/emotionally, sexuality contraception, STIs, birth, pregnancy, digestion (nutrition) and cannabis other names, effects (long and short term) and the effects on pregnant women (whilst driving, working etc.).
Teaching/Learning Purposes (written in terms of outcomes); By the end of the lesson the students should be able to (or have enhanced on the skill of..), the students should be able to demonstrate skills required to make informed decisions, proposing and implementing actions that promote their own and others health, safety and wellbeing. They should be able to gain an understanding on how to investigate and select strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing whilst also knowing how to seek help for themselves or others. The students will be able to identify what a Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs (PIED) are, give examples of types and why people use them. The students will have to listen for specific things and participate in class, group discussions and ask and answer questions to clarify understanding. (ACPPS072) (ACPPS073)
Preparation: o Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs Fact Sheet. o Man Whos Arms Exploded video clip. o PIED work sheet.
Learning Experiences: 1. How will I engage the learners? The students will all be asked to brainstorm examples of Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs (PIED) that they know of, to help me gain an insight as to how much they know. They will be shown a video clip of Man Whos Arms Exploded to help initiate a class discussion. Questions will be asked after the clip has finished such as, do you think the side effects are permanent? Do you think all performance enhancing drugs have side effects? Do you think there is a time where steroid use is acceptable? Time: Five minutes. 2. Student tasks and activities (what will the students do to achieve the lesson purposes? The students will be handed out a fact sheet on Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs and be asked to read through the sheet individually and silently, waiting for discussion time afterwards to ask any questions or share opinions. (There are some students who have been identified with literacy problems, these students will be grouped together and able to read the fact sheet together out aloud). If there is any questions or opinions that the students want to share we will then take some time to discuss them here. After the discussion is finished the students will be asked to put their fact sheets somewhere where they cannot see them (turn them over on the desk, hand them in etc.) to them be able to complete the work sheet that will be provided. The work sheet will ask a variety of questions (convergent, divergent and evaluative) so that the students can review the discussions that we have just had as well as thinking about scenarios e.g. if they caught someone using PIEDs etc. Time: Fifteen minutes.
3. Conclusion (how do you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson purposes? To conclude the lesson we will work through the answers of the work sheet as a class, discussing various answers and extensions to answers to help the students facilitate their learning. Time: Five minutes.
Assessment and Evaluation: (How do you know the students have achieved the learning purposes? Evaluate your own performance). I am confident that the learning purposes were achieved in this lesson plan through asking evaluative questions in both the quiz and throughout the lesson plan. Some of the students only gave one syllable answers, I could have strived to get a more detailed answer from the students to gain a better insight into their knowledge and understanding at the start of the lesson.
