Course Description: This one-year course is designed to focus on three critical areas: (1) Expect students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real-world issues and challenges (2) Require students to develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations as college students and employees regularly are called to do (3) Emphasize mathematical modeling and reasoning using mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, understand and make inferences about the situations, and improve decision making about how to solve problems and justify those solutions.
Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness, including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. This use of manipulatives, mathematical tools, and technology, including calculators, web sites, and computer software is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills the mathematics requirement for sixth-grade.
COURSE GOALS: Core Curriculum Standards COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICIES: The purpose of grades is to provide effective feedback to students and parents about a students progress towards mastery of the established standards for this course. As such, other factors such as attendance, effort, and behavior will not be considered when calculating a students grade. However, excessive absences (exceeds 20 absences) may result in a loss of credit in accordance with the Somerset Academy Las Vegas Losee Campus Parent/Student Handbook. Extra credit is not a part of this course. The teacher will provide students with unit overviews that outline the performance expectations for that unit. These overviews will be accompanied by rubrics that define the levels of proficiency students are expected to demonstrate. The goal is for students to become more involved in monitoring their level of proficiency of the established standards in order to improve their performance. Students will be graded on a 0-100 point scale with the following grade equivalents: 90 100 = A 80 - 89 = B 70 - 79 = C 60 - 69 = D 0 - 59 = F SOMERSET ACADEMY LAS VEGAS - LOSEE CAMPUS 2014 - 2015
There will be opportunity for students to re-do assignments or re-take assessments in order to improve their grade. Students must turn in assignments on time and take assessments on time in order to have this opportunity. Late work will be accepted if this student has an excused absence. It is the responsibility of the student to know when assignments and assessments are due. That information will be posted on the teacher website. During this school year Somerset Academy Las Vegas Losee Campus will be using the SpringBoard Mathematics text. The books will be housed in the math classroom. Units will be uploaded to the teacher website. Other resources will be used to provide a complete instructional environment. The students grade will be derived from the following categories: Exams 50% Quizzes, Projects 30% Class activities / Practice 20% Successful completion of this course will result in a student who has gained in depth knowledge of the mathematics content presented. These students will have learned mathematical skills necessary to demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways including presentations and projects, as well as traditional exams and quizzes. Materials needed for this class can be found on the teacher website: http://mslitzclass.weebly.com Behavior Expectations / Citizenship Marks There are two main areas that allow me to do my job of teaching your children. Being prepared and being kind. If students come to class with their supplies and ready to learn we can make great progress. If students are kind to themselves, their classmates and their teachers all will be right at school !! All students start with a satisfactory mark in citizenship. They earn the outstanding mark by Being Prepared and Being Kind. They would receive a lower mark for not following these two expectations.
