Three broad principles govern the structure of Indian drama and stage presentation.
The first is the principle of the modes of presentation, namely, the modes (dharmis), stage
way or stylized way (natya) and natural or the way of the world (loka). The second consists
of different types of styles (vrittis), namely the graceful (kaiseki) the grand (sattavati), the
energetic (arabhati) and the verbal (Bharati).; The third is the full play of the four types of
acting (abhinaya), namely the gestures (angika), vocal (vachika), costume, make-up, stage
props etc (aharya) and involuntary, of the temperament and emotional, etc (sattvika).

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions linked with the given passage :
In Bharatas concept of natya, dance and drama are not distinct entities, but are knit
together by the common element of abhinaya. Bharata does not distinguish the two. The
emotional dance mode, popular even today and theoretically based on the Natyashastra is
called Bharata-natyam. And Kalidasa equates the two terms in Malavikajnimitram. Dance

mode was used for movements, gestures, and such actions as chariot-ride, duel or fight, in
the stage presentation of a drama, and somtimes as a substitute for nepathya or stage
equipment. Bharata groups these modes under the term natyadharmi abhinaya, which is
conventional, symbolical or suggestive representation. Unlike the Western drama, or the
modern drama with which we are familiar, the Sanskrit drama was a symbolical or suggestive
representation.
