DEFINITION OF LUBRICANT: Lubricant is a substance used in between two moving surfaces

to reduce the friction.
LUBRICATION: Lubrication is a process of reducing friction and wear between two moving
surfaces by adding lubricant in between them.
FUNCTIONS:
1. Reduces wastage of energy so that the efficiency of the machine is enhanced.
2. Reduces wear and tear.
3. Reduces frictional heat and thus prevents the expansion of metals.
4. Minimizes corrosion.
5. Reduces the maintenance and running cost of the machine.
REQIREMENTS OF GOOD LUBRICANT:
1. It should not corrode the machine.
2. It should have high oiliness, viscosity index and aniline point.
3. It should have high flash and fire point.
4. It should not undergo any decomposition, oxidation and reduction at high temperature.
