8. Calculate the mass moment of inertia of the steel control wheel, as shown in Fig. Ia. in section, 10
about its central axis. There are eight spokes, each of which has a constant cross sectional area of
200 mm2. What percent n of the total moment of inertia is contributed by the outer rim?
b. Determine the mass moment of inertia of the mallet as shown in Fig. lb. about the x- axis. The 10
density of the wooden handle is 800 kg/m3 and that of the soft- metal head is 9000 kg/m3. The
longitudinal axis of the cylindrical head is normal to the x- axis. State any assumptions

2. a. A rocket released at a point A from a jet aircraft flying horizontally at 100 km/hr at an altitude of 8
800 m as shown in Fig. 2a. If the rocket thrust remains horizontal and gives the rocket a horizontal
acceleration of 0. 5g, determine the angle 0 from the horizontal to the line of sight to the target.
b. The slider P can be moved inward by means of the string S, while the slotted arm rotates about the 12
point 0 as shown in Fig. 2b. The angular position of the arm is given by 0= 0. 8t - t2/20, where 0 is
expressed in radians and
t
is in seconds. The slider is at
r =
1. 6m when
1=0
and thereafter is
drawn inward at the constant rate of 0. 2m/s. Determine the magnitude and direction ( expressed by
the angle a relative to the x- axis) of the velocity and acceleration of the slider when t = 4s.

3. a. Small steel balls, each with a mass of 65g , enter the semicircular trough in the vertical plane with a 8
horizontal velocity of 4. 1 m/s at A as shown in Fig. 3a. Find the force R exerted by the trough on
each ball in terms of 0 and the velocity v8 of the balls at B. Friction is negligible.
b. The 7- kg collar A slides with negligible friction on the fixed vertical shaft as shown Fig. 3b. When 6
the collar is released from rest at the bottom position shown, it moves up the shaft under the action
of the constant force F = 200 N applied to the cable. Calculate the stiffness k which the spring must
have if its maximum compression is to be limited to 75 mm. The position of the small pulley at B is
fixed.

3. C. the 200- kg lunar lander is descending onto the moon's surface with a velocity of 6 m/s when the 6
retro- engine is fired as shown in Fig- 3c. If the engine produces a thrust T for 4 s which varies
with the time as shown and then cuts off, calculate the velocity of the lander when t = 5 s,
m/s2
assuming that it has not yet landed. Gravitational acceleration at the moon's surface is 1. 62 .

a. fhe rear- wheel drive lawn mower as shown in Fig. Sa. , when placed into gear while at rest, is 10
observed to momentarily spin its rear tyres as it accelerates. If the coefficients of friction between
the rear tyres and the ground are , = 0. 7 and k =0. 5, determine the forward acceleration of the
mower. The mass of the mower and the attached bag is 50 kg. with center of mass at G. Assume
that the operator does not push on the handle so that P = 0.
