Learning Intent: To
identify what is already
known about the structure
and features of a
postcard.
Within a collaborative group discussion, ask the Ss what is already
known about the text.
Continue reading the text with the Ss. Ask Ss to volunteer to read
the text aloud to their peers. Aim to select a student who has not
yet had a turn at doing this)
Whilst reading each postcard check for Ss comprehension. Ask Ss
what they have learned from the text and what they have noticed
about the text.
Ask Ss to highlight features that have been discussed providing
examples (simple and compound sentences, facts and fiction,
adjectives etc)
Ensure Ss also take note of the structure of the text.

it.
Continue reading the book postcards from the planets aiming to
finish the entire book.

Visual to text
relationships
Learning Intent: To match
the visual image to the
correct postcard
Discuss with the Ss the importance of the image on the front of the
postcard.
Inform Ss that this image gives us more factual information about
what the writer is talking about in a visual way. Explain to Ss that the
image is a way of showing the reader what you might be seeing on
your holiday or journey.
Split the Ss into four groups and provide them with a range of
postcards with short messages. On a separate card provide images
that match these postcards. Ask the Ss to collaboratively match the
postcards with the images. (This task will demonstrate Ss
understanding)
Join together as a whole class and ask the Ss to share their findings
comparing amongst all groups. Collaboratively discuss.
Predicting
Learning Intent: To make
accurate predictions about
the text.
Introduce a new book to the Ss titled The Magic School Bus
Ask Ss to have a look at the front cover (title and images) and the
back cover and discuss their predictions about the text.
Ask Ss what the text might be about, what the text type is and what
might happen.
