Principles of

Wordle Project

Directions: To increase your comfort level with the process of surveying a sample population we will
complete a simple project to demonstrate the significance of several key concepts from the unit,
including: participant sample, bias, interview, self-fulfilling prophecy, validity, mode, and conclusions.

Gather necessary survey equipment (notebook paper, pencil).

Survey AT LEAST 100 people (you will select your own sample) with the following question: If
you had to choose one word to describe (your name), what would it be?

Record all of the 100+ individual words you are told.

Type your data into a word document in the following format:
o (your name) (adjective)
o Use no punctuation OR extra words such as is

Save your document.

Go to www.wordle.net and click Create your own. See figure 1.1

Copy the text from your word document and paste it into the field marked Paste in a bunch of
text. See figure 1.2

Click Go

You have now created a Wordle of YOU! From this screen to can adjust the font and layout of
your wordle. Because your name was typed next to EVERY adjective, it should appear as the
largest word on the page. If there were other words commonly used by your sample, they
would also appear larger than the rest. This is an intended outcome.

Be certain your wordle has a white background and black font. Do not attempt to print anything
otherwise.

Print your wordle!

On the back of your wordle, write one paragraph that summarizes your data and conclusions.
Expand the paragraph to include the following:
o Describe your population (what was the group that included EVERYONE that may have
participated in your study?)
o Describe your sample (what was the group FROM y our population that you selected to
actually participate in your study?)
o Was your sample representative of everyone in your life that would/could offer insight
on how they see you? How was it non-representative?
o Was there any bias in your data? Did you scrub any inappropriate responses or reject
any responses? What was your motive for that and how could it have skewed your
data?
o How did most of the participants view you (what was the mode of data collected)?
o Were there surprising outcomes within your study? Describe something you learned
about your subject (YOU) that you did not know before your research.
o How will you use the information gained from your study?
