DONKEY
A man kills a deer and takes it home to
cook for dinner. Both he and his wife
decide that they won't tell the kids what
kind of meat it is, but will give them a clue
and let them guess. The dad said, "Well
it's what Mommy calls me sometimes."
The little girl screamed to her brother,
"Don't eat it. Its an asshole!
HEARING AID

FOOL
There was a preacher who fell in the
ocean and he couldn't swim. When a boat
came by, the captain yelled, "Do you need
help, sir?" The preacher calmly said "No,
God will save me." A little later, another
boat came by and a fisherman asked,
"Hey, do you need help?" The preacher
replied again, "No God will save me."
Eventually the preacher drowned & went
to heaven. The preacher asked God,
"Why didn't you save me?" God replied,
"Fool, I sent you two boats!"
DAY DREAMING
Why did I get divorced? Well, last week
was my birthday. My wife didn't wish me a
happy birthday. My parents forgot and so
did my kids. I went to work and even my
colleagues didn't wish me a happy
birthday. As I entered my office, my
secretary said, "Happy birthday, boss!" I
felt so special. She asked me out for
lunch. After lunch, she invited me to her
apartment. We went there and she said,
"Do you mind if I go into the bedroom for
a minute?" "Okay," I said. She came out
5 minutes later with a birthday cake, my
wife, my parents, my kids, my friends, &
my colleagues all yelling, "SURPRISE!!!"
while I was waiting on the sofa and day

The Last Sermon of The Holy Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH)
Continued from page15
And if you were asked about me, what would
you say?"
They answered, "We bear witness that you
have conveyed the trust (of religion) and
discharged your ministry of Prophethood and
looked to our welfare."
Thereupon Allahs Messenger (may peace be
upon him) lifted his forefinger towards the sky
and then pointing towards people said:
"O Lord: Bear Thou witness unto it.
O Lord: Bear Thou witness unto it."

yourselves, and clothe them with the clothes
that you yourselves wear.
Take heed not to go astray after me and strike
one anothers necks. He who (amongst you)
has any trust with him, he must return it to its
owner.
O people! Listen and obey, though a mangled
Abyssinian slave is appointed your Amir,
provided he executes (the Ordinance of) the
Book of Allah among you.
O people! No Prophet would be raised after
me and no new Ummah (would be formed)
after you.
Verily I have left amongst you that which will
never lead you astray, the Book of Allah, which
if you hold fast you shall never go astray.
And beware of transgressing the limits set in
the matters of religion, for it is transgression of
(the proper bounds of) religion that brought
destruction to many people before you.
Verily, the satan is disappointed at ever being
worshipped in this land of yours, but he will be
pleased by obedience in anything (short of
worship that is) in matters you may be
disposed to think insignificant, so beware
of him in your matters of religion.
Behold! Worship your Lord; offer prayers five
times a day; observe fast in the month of
Ramadhaan; pay readily the Zakat (poor due)
on your property; and perform pilgrimage to
the House of God and obey your rulers and
you will be admitted to the Paradise of your
Lord.
Let him that is present, convey it unto him who
is absent, for many people to whom the
message is conveyed may be more mindful of
it than the audience.

feed them properly.
Behold! It is not permissible for a woman to
give anything from the wealth of her husband
to anyone but with his consent.
Treat the women kindly, since they are your
helpers and not in a position to manage their
affairs themselves. Fear Allah concerning
women, for verily you have taken them on the
security of Allah and have made their persons
lawful unto you by words of Allah.
O people! Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, has
ordained to every one his due share (of
inheritance). Hence there is no need (of
special) testament for an heir (departing from
the rules laid down by the Shariah).
The child belongs to the marriage-bed and the
violator of wedlock shall be stoned. And
Reckoning of their (deeds) rests with Allah.
He who attributes his ancestry to other than
his father or claims his clientship to other than
his master, the curse of Allah is upon him.
All depts must be repaid, all borrowed property
must be returned, gifts should be reciprocated
and a surety must make good the loss to the
assured.
Beware! No one committing a crime is
responsible for it but himself. Neither the child
is responsible for the crime of his father, nor
the father is responsible for the crime of his
child.
Nothing of his brother is lawful for a Muslim
except what he himself gives willingly. So do
not wrong yourselves.
O People! Every Muslim is the brother of
every other Muslim, and all the Muslims form
one brotherhood. And your slaves; see that
you feed them with such food as you eat
for the black over the white except in
God-conciousness.
All mankind is the progeny of Adam and Adam
was fashioned out of clay. Behold; every claim
of privilage whether that of blood or property,
is under my heels except that of the custody of
the Kabah and supplying of water to the
pilgrims, O people of Quraish, dont appear
(on the Day of Judgement) with the burden of
this world around your necks, whereas other
people may appear (before the Lord) with the
rewards of the hereafter. In that case I shall
avail you naught against Allah.
Behold! All practice of the days of ignorance
are now under my feet. The blood revenges of
the days of ignorance are remitted. The first
claim on blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabiah
bin Harith who was nursed in the tribe of
Saad and whom the Hudhayls killed. All
interest and usurious dues accruing from the
times of ignorance stand wiped out. And the
first amount of interest that I remit is that which
Abbas ibn Abd-al Muttalib had to receive.
Verily it is remitted entirely.
O people! Verily yor blood, your property and
your honour are sacred and inviolable until
you appear before your Lord, as the sacred
inviolability of this day of yours, this month of
yours and this very town (of yours). Verily you
will soon meet your Lord and you will be held
answerable for your actions.
O people! Verily you have got certain rights
over your women and your women have
certain rights over you. It is your right upon
them to honour their conjugal rights, and not
to commit acts of impropriety, which if they do,
you are authorised by Allah to separate them

severely, and if they refrain, then clothe and

Religion
The farewell Pilgrimage of the Holy Prophet
may rightly be called the culminating point in
his Prophetic career. It was the sixty-third year
of the Prophets life which coincided with the
close of the 10th of Hijra that he decided to
perform Hajj, which in history, goes by the
name of Hajja-tul-Wada. The Prophets
mission, had, by this time, been completed to
all intents and purposes. To a people steeped
in ignorance, he gave light and inspired them
with belief in Allah, the sole Creator, Master
and Sustainer of the Universe. To a disunited
mass, engaged in perpetual warfare, he gave
unity of thought and action. He had revealed
the love of God and His will to mankind and
had given it a visible expression by founding a
society on the basis of righteousness, piety
and God-consciousness, the like of which is
not to be found in the whole history of
mankind. In short, Syedna Muhammad had
delivered to human race the final Truth with all
its necessary implications.
The completion of His prophetic mission
implied His departure from this earthly home to
the heavenly abode. The Holy Prophet had
clearly visualised it. He, therefore, decided to
give the finishing touch to his massive work
and imprint its salient points on the minds of
his devoted followers so that they might
always keep before them the system of
life-values enunciated by Islam. It was with this
object in view that messages were sent to all
parts of Arabia inviting people to join him in
this great Pilgrimage.
Five days before Dhu-al-hijjah, the Holy
Prophet put on Ahram, the pilgrims garb, and
set out to Makkah with more than 114,000
Muslims. All his wives accompanied him. As
rode, he recited "Labbaik! Allahumma
Labbaik! Labbaika Laa shareeka Lak, Inna
lHamda wan na'imata lakaa wal mulk, laa
shareeka lak" signifying, "Here I am at Thy
service, here I am, O Lord, here I am to
declare that there is no partner with Thee. All
praise and blessings belong to Thee and all
sovereignity is Thine. I am here at Thy service,
and Thou hast no partner, O Allah." As the
Holy Prophet recited the above call, all his
Companions repeated the same loudly.
The Holy Prophet reached Makkah on the 5th
of Dhu-al-Hijjah. He made seven circuits
(tawaf) of the Kabah, offered two rakats of
prayer at Maqam-e-Ibrahim and climbing the
Mount of Safa declared, "There is no god but
Allah, He has no partner, all sovereignty and
praise belong to Him. He gives life and brings
death. He is All-Powerful and Supreme over
everything."
On the 8th of Dhu-al-Hijjah, the Prophet left
with his Companions for Mina and spent the
night there, and on the 9th, after the Fajr,
morning prayer, He proceeded to Plains of
Arafat where he delivered the famous sermon
which we have the honour to present below.
The sermon of the Holy Prophet is not only
remarkable for its eloquence, but it contains a
sublime message for the whole of the human
race. It was a declaration of Human Rights and
moral values, a charter of Women Rights. The
world has not been able to lay down better
principles of ethics and morality than those
enunciated in it. Every word of it breathes a
spirit of magnanimity and aims at establishing
righteousness and fair dealing among men on
a workable basis. It establishes brotherhood
among Muslims irrespective of the divergence
of their geographical, racial and colour
backgrounds and provides an outline of a
social order, perfectly free from oppression
and injustice. It was the declaration of Finality
of Syedna Muhammad's Prophethood, the
religion was being perfected by this Final
Message from The Creator to his creatures for
all times to come.
THE LAST SERMON OF THE HOLY
PROPHET (PBUH) OF ISLAM
(Peace and Love of Allah may eternally
descend upon Him and His Pious Family and
Companions)
"All praise is due to Allah, so we praise Him,
and seek His pardon and we turn to Him. We
seek refuge with Allah from the evils of
ourselves and from the evil consequences of
our deeds. Whom Allah guides aright there is
none to lead him astray; and there is none to
guide him aright whom Allah leads astray. I
bear witness that there is no God but Allah, the
One, having no partner with Him. His is the
sovereignty and to Him is due all praise. He
grants life and causes death and is Powerful
over everything. There is no God but Allah, the
One; He fulfilled His promise and granted
victory to His bondsman, and He alone routed
the confederates (of the enemies of Islam).
O People! Listen to my words, for I do not
know whether we shall ever meet again and
perform Hajj after this year. O Ye people!
Allah says, O people We created you from
one male and one female and made you into
tribes and nations, so as to be known to one
another. Verily in the sight of Allah, the most
honoured amongst you is the one who is most
God-fearing. There is no superiority for an
Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over
an Arab, nor for the white over the black nor

The fee itself costs 550 pesos per passenger,
and is meant to augment the national budget
for the care and maintenance of all airports.
Officials of MIAA admit that the policy has an
effect on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs)
whose tickets were purchased online or
abroad. The airport management said that for
such tickets, a system has yet to be put in
place for airline companies and travel
agencies based outside of the Philippines to
recognize who are the OFWs and who are
ordinary passengers.
Why does this matter? Under Philippine law,
Filipino migrant workers are deemed
exempted from paying such terminal fees
upon presentation of proof from the Philippine
Overseas Employment Administration (POEA)
that they are indeed OFWs. Such proof is now
defined as the Overseas Employment
Certificate issued by the POEA to all
newly-hired migrant workers and those
returning for temporary visits to the Philippines
("Balik-Manggagawa" or "Returning Workers").
Here is the exact wording of the law:
"Exemption from Travel Tax, Documentary
Stamp and Airport Fee. - All laws to the
contrary notwithstanding, the migrant workers
shall be exempt from the payment of travel tax
and airport-fee upon proper showing of proof
entitlement by the POEA." One wonders how a
law can be altered through a MIAA
memorandum circular despite its impact on
millions of Filipinos working overseas.
According to the new airport policy, Filipinos
working abroad with online or overseas air
ticket purchases will have a separate counter
in all international airports in the Philippines to
get a refund of their terminal fees. For MIAA,
this is sufficient compliance with the existing
law since only overseas workers are entitled to
such refunds.
Such an interpretation does not sit well with
overseas workers and advocates of migrant
workers' rights. An online petition through
www.change.org/ph initiated by Global OFW
Voices against the new airport policy has
garnered more than 3,000 supporters. A group
of overseas Filipino bloggers known as PEBA,
also used memes and social cards using
#noto550 in voicing their objection to the
integration of the terminal fee.
Kenji Solis, one of the founders of PEBA,
objected to the new policy citing lack of direct
consultations with the OFWs.
Indeed, this writer voiced the same concern in
a recent meeting with officials of the airport
authority since the integration policy will take
effect on Oct. 1. They promised to launch an
information campaign about the new policy
through their public information unit. So far, no
such media blitz has taken place.
Will the Philippine government listen to the
voices of global Filipinos?

Hadith
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
reported: The poor came to the Messenger of
Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) and said: Oh, Messenger of Allah, the
wealthy have gone with the highest ranks and
lasting bliss. They offer salah (prayer) as we
offer it; they observe fast as we do; and as
they are wealthy, they perform Hajj and
'Umrah, and go for Jihad, and they spend in
charity. The Messenger of Allah said, Shall I
not teach you something with which you may
overtake those who surpassed you and with
which you will surpass those who will come
after you? None will excel you unless he who
does which you do. You should recite:
Tasbeeh (Allah is free from imperfection
Subhan Allah), Takbeer (Allah is Greatest
Allahu Akbar), Tahmeed (Praise be to Allah
AlHamdu lillah) thirty-three times after each
salah. [Bukhari]
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)
narrated that a group of the Companions came
to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah
be upon him), and said, O Messenger of
Allah, the wealthy people will have higher
grades and will have permanent enjoyment
and they pray like us and fast as we do. They
have more money, which they give in charity.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him), replied: Has Allah not rendered for
you the 'Isha' prayer in congregation equal to
Hajj, and the Fajr prayer in congregation equal
to 'Umrah? [Muslim]

AKP government for the next 50 years, but we
do not know what is in the agreement. The oil
and gas policies only reflect the interests of the
KDP and PUK, not those of the public in
Kurdistan, the media or other political parties.
It is strange that Turkey has not gone beyond
the Iraqi limitations in its relations with the
KRG. Just to give an example, the KRG built
oil pipelines in its territories, yet Turkey has not
built any pipelines to move the KRG's oil to the
Turkish port of Ceyhan. And according to
Saddam Hussein's former regime and the
Turkish government, the Kirkuk-Ceyhan
pipeline cannot move any oil from any parts of
the Kurdistan region without the acceptance of
both Turkey and Kurdistan.
KDP and PUK headquarters in Turkey
Erdogan has paid a visit to the Kurdistan
region, and Massoud Barzani and Nechirvan
Barzani have regularly paid visits to Turkey,
yet Turkey has not allowed the KRG to open
an office in Turkey. What we have now in
Turkey are headquarters for the KDP and
PUK. On the other side, in the KRG
relationship with Iran, there has been less
development with regard to political and
economic relations, especially as compared to
Turkey, but the KRG now has an official office
in Tehran which is recognized by the Iranian
government. It was Iran that collaborated with
the KRG in fighting against the ISIL terrorists.
Massoud Barzani acknowledged the role of
Iran in his Arbil press conference with
Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's foreign
minister. Due to losing Turkey as an ally, the
KRG was obliged to take part in Baghdad's
new government without insisting too much on
its demands. Iran then became the winner
again in Iraq's politics. Surely this has given a
chance to the PUK to criticize KDP relations
with Turkey more and invigorate the discourse
that strengthening relations with Iran will
benefit the KRG more as compared to
strengthening relations with Turkey.
According to Kurdish news sources, Massoud
Barzani has spoken with his nephew,
Nechirvan Barzani, about his failure to make
Turkey a trusted ally. In the meantime, both
the chief of staff to the KRG presidency, Dr.
Fuad Hussein, and the KRG's chief of foreign
relations, Falah Mustafa, have said they have
lost hope that Turkey will support the KRG.
The AKP and Erdogan should have realized
that the KRG has done much for the sake of
having a regional power be its ally, and an ally
is hard to find these days, not only due to
economic reasons.
The KRG courted Turkey and took a position
against Iraq and Iran for the sake of winning
Turkey's support; they signed oil deals with the
AKP government without Baghdad's
acceptance and supported Turkey's regional
power to balance Iran's hegemony in regional
politics, but the AKP government did not
appreciate the KRG's endeavors.
For both nations, Turks and Kurds, it is great
to have very good relations; in having these
type of relations both sides are winners. But
we have realized that unless Turkey has a
Kurdish issue in its territories, Turkey's
governments cannot have Kurdish allies in
Iraq.
Turkey should first solve its Kurdish issue; only
then can we build trust between us, for
otherwise it will be impossible for trust to be
rebuilt.
Most importantly, relations should be
institutional, not personal. In Turkey and the
Kurdistan region there are other political
parties that should be part of the relations
between the two, as well as the media and
public opinion. If relations are not
institutionalized and remain between specific
leaders, then they will end nowhere but in
desperation, as happened with Erdo?an and
Barzani.

Turkey
End of myth of Turkey-KRG alliance
Before the fall of the city of Shingal to the
Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)
terrorists, Turkey was considered a reliable ally
of the Kurdistan region. However, the IS
offensive on the city and elsewhere in the
region brought about an end to this
relationship.
Relations between the Kurdistan region and
Turkey have been improving over the past
eight years. Undoubtedly, the developments
were embraced warmly by many people in
both areas, yet many were critical about the
relations between the two. The Turkey-
-Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)
alliance has been overestimated in the region.
While many KRG officials and pro-KRG
journalists and scholars -- even foreigners --
were promoting a "real marriage of Turkey and
the KRG" and a "strategic alliance of Turkey
and the KRG," the Turkish officials never
supported that. Surprisingly, the Turkish
officials always refrained from using any kind
of term that showed they considered the KRG
a sovereign regional government. To be more
precise, by Turkish officials I mean the Justice
and Development Party (AKP) and
"Erdoganist" officials.
Turkey has over 1,000 companies operating in
the area that the KRG controls, with almost
40,000 workers -- more than any other
country, including Iran, which has had good
relations with the KRG since 1992. The $15
billion in Turkish investment and trade has
given Turkey huge advantages without the
KRG getting anything in return. The KRG has
become dependent on Turkey's products,
even though Turkey is dependent on the KRG
market. Both sides are trying to increase the
amount of investment. This is a far more
lucrative business for Turkish gross domestic
product (GDP) than that which Turkey has with
Germany, the UK or France.
But why has Turkey turned a blind eye to ISIL
terrorist attacks against the KRG when the
KRG considered Turkey a regional ally, not
only to protect the KRG from enemies but to
support the KRG's claims for independence?
One of the serious issues with the Kurdistan
region's foreign relations is that these relations
are formulated on the bases of the interests of
the two ruling parties, the Kurdistan
Democratic Party (KDP), led by KRG President
Massoud Barzani, and the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan (PUK), led by former Iraqi President
Jalal Talabani. Regional and foreign policy is
based on the interests of the families of these
two leaders.
The failure of the myth of the Turkey-KRG
alliance was revealed when Turkey refused to
help the KRG in fighting against ISIL in any
way.
Many Turkish and Kurdish journalists and
scholars have discussed Turkish-KRG
relations, but all the relations have been
between two leaders: KRG Prime Minister
Nechirvan Barzani and Turkish President
Recep Tayyip Erdogan. These two leaders
have conflated their personal interests with
their countries' interests.
Though there have been radical changes in
Turkey and in the whole region, the AKP
government has always been hesitant to go
forward with the relationship with the KRG
other than economically, which is something
that will not only benefit the country but also
officials at the same time.
As relations between the two have not been
institutionalized because of the
aforementioned reasons, their legality remains
uncertain. Apart from Nechirvan Barzani and a
few men in his circle, no one knows how the
KRG's relations with Turkey have been
formulated and on what bases Barzani has
signed huge oil and gas deals with the AKP
government. It is said that Nechirvan Barzani
has signed a huge oil and gas deal with the
Former Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (L) with KRG President Massoud Barzani
in Diyarbakir in Nov. of 2013.

released to the public. No firm date for making
final results public has been announced.
Abdullah is also insisting that the final election
results, due within days, be delayed until a
deal on a unity government is agreed.
However, election officials have said they will
announce them whether or not there is a deal.
The Abdullah camp could walk out of
negotiations if the results are released without
its consent-frustration arising out of losing
presidential elections for the second time in a
row has made Abdullah a wild card; and
ironically, only he holds the key to smooth
political transition.
Secretary of State John Kerry has made a
personal effort to settle the issue by convincing
the contenders to form a national unity
government. Reportedly there are "a couple of
substantial remaining issues" with regard to
the power sharing agreement. Among the
other unresolved issues, there are sticking
points as to how many government positions
each side can appoint and whether the new
chief executive can call and chair cabinet
meetings. Details of how much power the chief
executive would wield have been a major
obstacle in finalising the deal.
It will be a catastrophe for Afghanistan, if the
deal does not come about, or falls apart at the
implementation stage. "We are able to work
together pragmatically," Ghani said. Two sides
have agreed on a formula for a new
government position of "chief executive officer,
who will be responsible for implementing
policies and will chair council of ministers. The
CEO - presumably Dr Abdullah or his
nominee- would report to the president and his
cabinet; and would also be engaged as a
participant in decision making process. That
certainly sounds like a viable power-sharing
formula. Given the high stakes, the two men
ought to find a way to resolve the outstanding
details at the earliest.
Afghanistan's President Karzai has recently
said that the United States needed to work
with other countries that also had an interest in
the vote's outcome to help push through the
deal. "Afghanistan must not be a ground for
competition between countries ... It is therefore
important that the US should seek an
environment of common understanding with
other countries," he said. His spokesman
Aimal Faizi said that President wanted the US
to engage regional powers including
neighboring Iran.
Both Ashraf and Abdullah have fallen victim to
Afghanistan's ethnic and geographic fault
lines. Ashraf is a Pashtun who won strong
support in the country's east and south.
Abdullah has the backing of northern
Afghanistan's Tajik and Hazara communities.
Abdullah won the first round and he thinks that
during the runoff, Ashraf has benefited from
massive fraud orchestrated by the Karzai
government and that the rigging has not been
fully reversed by a United Nations audit.
However, both Presidential contenders have
unanimity on strategic matters; for example,
both Ashraf and Abdullah support signing the
Bilateral Security Agreement with the US and
a Status of Forces Agreement with the NATO.
These agreements would allow US military
trainers and counterterrorism forces to remain
in the country after this year. Without such
agreements, all foreign troops are likely to be
pulled out by the end of this year; and the flow
of foreign aid and support would halt.
However, at the peoples' level, there is a
strong opposition to these agreements; these
are thought to be instruments for perpetuating
foreign occupation of Afghanistan
Peace and stability in Pakistan is intricately
linked to what happens in Afghanistan.
Therefore, during these trying times, Pakistan
looks-up to Afghan leadership to demonstrate
pragmatism and come out of the on-going
political morass and effect a smooth political
transition.

As America struggles to find ways and means
to mobilize blood and treasure to fuel and
propel another 'war of decades' in Iraq to
militarily engage the Islamic State, Afghan
government has sounded a distress alarm that
it is broke. It has formally requested the US for
an immediate $537 million bailout. Presidential
hopeful, Mr. Ashraf Ghani has said that there
is a budgetary shortage of more than $900
million, in part due to a collapse in tax and
customs collections over doubts about the
formation of new government. With America
focusing on the Islamic State fighters across
Iraq and Syria, the Taliban may not seem so
pressing a threat.
Be that as it may, without immediate rescue,
the Afghan government won't be able to pay
its employees. Afghanistan's 350,000 strong
security forces are paid for by the America led
coalition; the Afghan government only
provides them daily meals. An oft quoted
military adage has it that the "Army marches
on its stomach". And if the soldiers don't eat,
they create serious problems; they may even
go on rampage. Therefore, without the bailout,
Afghan government will have a difficult time
keeping terrorists out of Afghanistan. The
Taliban are increasing pressure around Kabul,
where they killed two American troops outside
the US embassy in a suicide bombing on
September 16. Another indicator of economic
difficulties is that power supply to some of the
cities is being scaled down due to lack of
funding to sustain capacity level generation.
According to some analysts, the Americans
have built a government in Afghanistan that it
can't sustain. So far, Afghanistan's
reconstruction has received nearly $104 billion
dollars over the last 13 years, and the US is
likely to invest at least $5-8 billion a year, once
foreign troops leave the country. Afghan
government is heavily dependant on foreign
aid. Over 60 percent of its GDP is mobilized
through foreign donors; a major chunk is
underwritten by the United States.
With regard to political transition, a stalemate
prevails due to non-acceptance of the
presidential election results by the contenders.
Both sides have pledged to accept the results
of a UN monitored investigation into
vote-rigging. The political landscape in
Afghanistan is jockeying between an implosion
that could ignite civil war in Kabul and a
power-sharing deal that could give the country
another chance for stability.
Election results are likely to confirm former
finance minister Ashraf Ghani as winner.
Abdullah and Ghani were close to a
power-sharing deal after they met face-to-face
on September 16; however, they failed to
reach an agreement. Abdullah did not want the
results as they now stand. He wants more
ballots invalidated to narrow Ghani's presumed
margin of victory. One of the proposals
Abdullah made in his meeting with Ghani was
for the Election Complaints Commission to
invalidate more votes in order to narrow the
margin between the candidates while still
allowing Ghani to win. "We were asked to
agree on an outcome of the result by a close
margin, but we did not accept it." Ghani's
spokesman Tahir Zahir said. "We want the
election bodies to announce the genuine result
of the election", he added. A government
official with direct knowledge of the meeting
confirmed that Abdullah had asked for
adjusted results that showed him losing
narrowly so that he could sell the deal to his
backers. Abdullah's spokesman Rahimi said,
"Any results showing a loss by a wide margin
could enrage supporters of the losing side; so
there are talks and different ideas how to
manage that so we don't have a crisis."
The protracted electoral process has now
entered its final phase, requiring a separate
Elections Complaints Commission to rule on
allegations of fraud, aside from the UN
sponsored audit. After completing its task,
Elections Complaints Commission would send
the result to the Independent Elections
Commission to be declared official and

India
Modi has spoken, now he must act
At last, Narendra Modi has got it right. It
behoves him as Prime Minister to say, "Indian
Muslims will live for India, they will die for India
- they will not want anything bad for India."
(This can equally be said of any group of
citizens who are a religious minority.) The PM's
observation - made in an interview with a
well-known American journalist of Indian
Muslim origin for CNN - fits perfectly with "the
idea of India" on which the post-colonial Indian
state is founded, and one which animated
India's independence struggle.
This understanding has been upheld by the
country's "secular" parties, most notably the
Indian National Congress, but sought to be
placed under the scanner in the RSS scheme
of things - with which the present Prime
Minister has grown up - where the Muslim, in
particular, is demonised.
On account of this, it will ordinarily be hard for
someone who politically - and culturally and
ideologically - draws inspiration from the RSS,
the fount of Hindutva thought in the country, to
suggest that the Indian Muslim is an Indian
patriot.
To that extent, Mr Modi has scaled a peak,
although his core supporters, who may think of
Muslims as being people with horns, are likely
to be disappointed with his new message.
Even if Mr Modi's new-found voice is for public
relations purposes, considering the dark
anti-Muslim image that has clung to him like a
shadow, the Prime Minister can at least now
be held to account for the words he has used
from a public forum. In a democracy, it is good
for the people to have such a leverage with
their elected leader.
,"Indian Muslims will live
for India, they will die for
India - they will not want
anything bad for India."
Narendra Modi
It couldn't have passed anyone's notice that
the Prime Minister's newly-enunciated
endorsement of India's Muslim community
comes days before he leaves for an official
visit to the United States of America where he
might just be sought to be reminded,
especially by those of Indian origin, of the
anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat when he was
the state Chief Minister. (He will doubtless also
have many admirers from amongst the same
set.)
And the Prime Minister - perhaps more than
most politicians - is known to be alive to the
benefits of doing or saying things for effect,
and to strike an image.
Even so, his sudden burst of enthusiasm for
Indian Muslims will be seen to have real
meaning if the Prime Minister can ensure that
those linked to his party and various Hindutva
outfits who have thought nothing of spreading
poison against the Muslim community
(especially since Mr Narendra Modi came to
power last May) are firmly dealt with under the
law. That will give meaning to the idea of
Indian citizenship and naitionhood, and will
strongly convey the message that the Indian
Muslim is not about to become putty in the
hands of fundamentlist organisations like the
Al Qaeda.

Pakistan
MUHAMMAD WAQAS
At a time when the Sharif government is still
facing a tsunami of protesters in Islamabad,
massive floods have swept through Pakistan
once again. The floods have displaced
thousands of people and led to over 200
casualties in the widely ravaged regions of
Kashmir and Punjab.
Experts estimate that the
floods could eventually
cause a loss of up to
$2 billion and cause a
significant economic
slowdown.
Supply side constraints due to widespread
damage to agricultural sector and weak
manufacturing activity in Pakistan may push
up inflation, and adversely impact the country's
other macroeconomic indicators. The flash
floods in 2010 dragged down Pakistan's
economic growth to just 2.6 percent against a
target of 4.5 percent as all major sectors of the
economy, including fertilizer, textiles and oil
and gas, could not escape devastation.
Given the recent political turmoil, it came as no
surprise that major political parties are scoring
points by sympathizing with the flood victims.
Leaders of the ruling PML-N, including Sharif
brothers, toured the flooded plains of Punjab
to assess the scale of damage and direct relief
efforts. Even as the government distributed aid
among victims, it faced complaints related to
the flood mitigation system, pace of relief
work, and were questioned about what could
have been done to prevent colossal loss of
lives and property in the first place. As the
flood victims expressed their frustration with an
inefficient system, the time was ripe for Imran
Khan to gain political ground in these disaster
hit areas. Khan also took some time off from
the sit-in protests in Islamabad to visit disaster
hit areas. Enjoying a recent surge in political
clout, he was cheered for rallying public
support and in, some instances, highlighting
stories of official negligence.
Pakistan is on the brink of a national
emergency and it is imperative that everyone
stands united to aid the flood victims. This is a
time to set political differences aside and
assist the relief operations. Keeping in mind
the nation's response to 2010 floods, there
should be no doubt that Pakistan has the
ability to disregard political loyalties and step
up relief efforts to rehabilitate flood victims.
More importantly, Pakistan
urgently needs to build
national consensus on
building large-scale dams,
such as Kalabagh project,
to avert such frequent
flooding disasters in future.
These reservoirs will not only enhance
Pakistan's water storage capacity to prevent
famine-like situations, but also contribute
much-needed cheap hydro-power to the
national grid.
Like Pakistan, India is also reeling under
floods as the natural calamity has caused
extensive damage in the Jammu and Kashmir
region. In what is being termed as "flood
diplomacy," leaders of both India and Pakistan
have offered to extend each other relief and
rescue support. The exchange of sympathies
could help the bitter rivals break ice and
achieve a thaw in their bilateral relations. The
willingness to support each other in a crisis
situation is an encouraging development after
the recent cancelation of secretary level talks
by India and aggravation of hostilities across
the Line of Control (LoC). Although neither of
the two parties have accepted the offer for aid,
it is hoped that the natural disaster would help
them bring closer and reduce the simmering
tension on humanitarian basis.

AKBAR KHAN
This presentation began right after Maghrib
prayer and ended after 11 PM with 3 five
minute breaks; Isha prayer was after the
lecture. MCC hall was full to capacity and the
audience ranged from toddlers to seniors.
Br. Nouman started by answering the big
question, why Quran has "stories" (I call it
history lessons) scattered, a piece here a
piece there and not all in one place. He started
with modern day movies, how they present a
story or TV series/episodes and related that
style to Quran's way of presenting history
convincing any mind that there is nothing that
can challenge the Hikmat of Allah SWT -
SubhanAllah!
Br. Nauman Ali's presentation was not a
sermon, it was not a comedy, it was not a story
presentation but it was a combination of ALL
of these things and there was not a dull
moment. Audience was very attentive, young
and old, and everyone laughed, got inspired
and gained more knowledge of the Quran's
"stories" than ever before, in my humble
opinion. Br. Nouman displayed a combination
of knowledge and wisdom and recommended
that parents should teach both knowledge and
wisdom to their children. In other words
knowledge of dunya and Deen (Islam) both
are necessary for Muslims.
There are many historic biblical "stories" or
lessons in Quran but he concentrated on Musa
AlayhiSalam's (Moses) story with brief
comparison to Hazrat Yousaf AlihiSalam. The
most valuable aspect was not just giving such
details of Moses story but relating the incidents
to our current life situations and providing
guidance on how we should raise our children
and how we should deal with our youth (sons
& daughters) and how we should throw out our
personal egoistic norms and practices,
stereotypes and bigotry and take guidance
from Quran. Br Nouman did a great job in
relating the Quranic "stories" to addressing the
social problems in our modern life. His
recommendation to all was to recite and learn
from Quran even if it is just a few minutes
every day. He emphasized the need for
Muslim communities to establish strong
institutions that produce knowledgeable and
wise people who can perform at any job,
engineering, medicine, business, etc. and yet
provide a sermon or conduct a class when
called upon.
During his presentation, he also pointed out
how the wisdom and intellect of women is
recognized in Islam and how the status of
women is elevated when Allah SWT
mentioned about the Moses' sister who
watched her brother floating in a box or basket
down the river; then later, the two sisters of
whom one became Moses's wife.
My purpose of this review is bi-fold. One, those
who missed can know how it went and try to
attend particularly the youth, whenever they
get chance particularly when we have a high
caliber Alim presenting. I can assure you it will
be worth your while. Second, in our growing
community, we need to invite Alims who can
relate to the entire audience and help
community members understand our Deen
and how it addresses our current problems.
So, ICCD/MCC, my Congratulations! and May
Allah reward those who put together this event
and helped carry out. - Ameen.

"I don't want to burst Albany's bubble". James Comey
ALBANY, NY - "I don't want to burst Albany's
bubble in any way", this was said at the
Federal Bureau of Investigation's Albany field
office by FBI Director James B. Comey on his
first visit on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd. Comey told
reporters he doesn't think official misconduct is
more prevalent in Albany than in other
statehouses.
Comey was joined at the news conference by
several top Albany-based law enforcement
officials from local, state and federal
government agencies.
He stressed the importance of agencies
working together, saying that someone
involved in terrorism would likely first be
spotted by a local officer, not an FBI agent.
Comey made it clear that counterterrorism is
the bureau's top priority - with a focus on
frequent travelers to Syria and terrorist
propaganda.
He said the country is "far safer" than it was
before the 9/11 attacks, but "there's no such
thing as safe."
The Capital Region is in no more danger of a
terrorist attack than anywhere else in the
country, he stated.
"Obviously, any major city or capital of a state
is an area that draws attention in a way that a
farming community or a smaller town would
not," Comey said. "But there's no reason why I
would single out Albany in assessing the
threat."
Terror groups such as ISIS, al-Qaeda and
"al-Qaeda's progeny" have placed their
propaganda and training materials on the
Internet for would-be terrorists, Comey said.
"The challenge for all of us in that is if they're
in their pajamas in their basement never
actually reaching out and making contact
overseas, they're very hard for us to track,"
Comey said.
He said thousands of jihad supporters from
Europe and North America, including the U.S.,
have joined militant organizations, some
traveling overseas.
"We have tracked over 100 people who have
traveled to Syria, attempted to travel to Syria
and been locked up by us or gone to Syria and
returned," Comey said at the FBI's McCarty
Avenue headquarters. "That group of people
worries us because they're going there and
meeting terrorists, learning the trades of
terrorism (and) it's worrisome."
Comey likened terror groups to cancer cells.
He said America has made great progress at
"the primary tumor of al-Qaeda" in regions of
Afghanistan and Pakistan primarily by taking
the fight to the terrorists.

Ex-public defender
Jerome Frost dies
TROY, NY - Jerome K. "Jerry" Frost,
Rensselaer County's public defender for 16
years before he retired in 2012, has died.
Frost, 75, whose law career of 46 years began
in 1965, died Monday afternoon.
The County Legislature appointed Frost to a
part-time job in 1995 after Public Defender
Heather Wollowitz went to work for Attorney
General Dennis Vacco. The job became full
time in 2006.
In June, the New York State Bar Association
honored Frost with the Denison Ray Criminal
Defender Award for his devotion to clients,
efforts to raise assigned counsel rates and
work to improve public perception of criminal
defenders.
In his most noted foray into politics, Frost, an
enrolled Conservative Party member, ran with
the backing of the Republican and Taxpayers
Justice parties for county judge against
McGrath in 1993. McGrath, a Democrat, won
that race. He is now a Supreme Court justice.
