Dear students, parents, and guardians:

Hello! My name is Sarah Young, and I will be your childs English/Language Arts
teacher for the 14-15 school year at Sedgefield Middle. I hope we all have had a
restful summer and are ready for a productive and engaging school year!

Expectations
We have a very busy school year ahead, and because of that our classroom will
abide by certain rules and expectations in order to ensure maximum learning
time!
Each day, students should come to class, get out their binder, and get
started immediately on the Do Now activity.
As soon as students come in class, they should write down the homework
in their agenda and leave their agenda on the desk for me to initial. Even
if there is no homework that day, students should still note this. This
helps me ensure that every student is getting down the homework, and
allows parents an opportunity to keep informed about homework
assignments.
Students should please raise their hand for any questions, to sharpen a
pencil, or to get out of their seat for any reason.
In order to ensure that class time is not interrupted with multiple
students coming and going at once, each student will be given 9 passes
per quarter for bathroom and water breaks. This equals one a week.

However, just as I have certain expectations for your student, you also can
expect the following from me:

I will return any graded work promptly, within three days of being taken
up.
I will keep my class website up to date with the latest news and
assignment due dates. The address is:
http://msyoungs8thgrade.weebly.com/
I will return any emails or phone calls the same day I receive them.
I will teach your child according to what they need and how they learn as
individuals.

Grading
Homework/Reading logs: 10% A = 93 - 100
Quizzes/Short writing: 30% B = 85 92
Class (daily) work: 20% C = 77 84
Tests/projects: 40% D = 70 76
F = 0 69
Absent Work
When absent, students should check the posted folders on the wall for the
proper day they were absent and collect any work that they missed. Students
have one week from the assignment due date to turn in major assessments
(quizzes, tests, projects). If you missed a quiz or test, it is your responsibility to
schedule a time to make it up before or after school.

Consequences
Hopefully, the need for these consequences will not arise too often!
1. Silent Lunch, Recess Detention, or Room Detail
2. Call home
3. Teacher-student conference, call home
4. Referral, request for parent-teacher conference

Rewards
I absolutely believe in rewarding both individual students and whole classes for
work well done. Individual students can expect postcards/calls home for
exceptional behavior and work, and each class will operate on a Brownie
Points system. Whenever the class gets a compliment or is working hard, they
will earn a brownie for their tray. Once the tray is filled, the class will get a
reward of their choosing!

Needed Materials
Each student will need the following to be well prepared for my class:
A 1 inch 3 ring binder, to be brought to class every day
A set of FIVE divider tabs
Notebook paper
Composition notebook
