Prior knowledge:
Students are able to describe the connections of the local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Peoples with the
land, sea and animals of their place.(ACARA, 2014, p. 353.)
Student can pose questions using the stems what do I feel, what would it be like to, what effect. (ACARA,
2014, p. 353.)
Students are developing questions about the connections they have to other places. (ACARA, 2014, p. 353.)
Can interviewing other people and significant Elders to find out the places they visited when they were young.
(ACARA, 2014, p. 353.)
Write or talk about their connection to places using appropriate directional and locational terms, including north
and south. (ACARA, 2014, p. 354.)
Lesson objective/s:
Develop student awareness that they have the capacity to create and implement sustainable change in their
environment.
Evidence of learning:
Students to design and create a postcard based on the information and knowledge gained from the previous
lesson on sustainability.

Story: Journey of the Sea Turtle by Mark Wilson
Introduction
(10 minutes.)
Begin lesson with a discussion by showing Postcard examples. (Appendix 4, p. 21.)
Ascertain student knowledge about postcards. Has anyone ever written/received one? What
are they used for? Are there other uses for postcards, if so, what are some of these uses?
Provide students with their lessons inquiry question: How can I tell others about the
wonderful world we live in?
Discuss possible ways to communicate with others: drawing, writing, skyping, messaging,
emailing, telephoning and sending a postcard.
Body
(30 minutes.)
Teacher to provide explicit instruction for lesson objective: to design and create two postcards
based on what they have learned from the Indigenous elder and Park ranger from last lesson.
Watch video, Mon Repos Turtle Encounters, Bundaberg North Burnett, Queensland or
Indigenous Protected Areas Environment (Video can assist in helping develop ideas.)
Discuss ideas of how to communicate to others, making them aware of the importance of
protecting our environment for the future.
Students design and make the postcards. (Example and graphic organiser: Appendix 4, p.
22.)
The postcards can be sent to the either a Year 3 class at Sekolah Sugar Group School in
Indonesia, (The school is located on the Sugar Group plantation, in the village of Mataram
Hick, district of Tulang Bawang situated in Lampung Province, on the island of Sumatra,
Indonesia. This is approximately a three hour drive from Raden Intan Lampung Airport) or a
school of their choice, somewhere in Australia.) (Appendix 4, p. 20.)

Conclusion

Recap on lesson, clarify and assess student understanding of
change/environment/awareness/informing others.
Discuss who, where and why they are going to send their postcards to. Reaffirm
understanding of lesson focus question: How can I tell others about the wonderful world we
live in? (Mark these places on a world map when decisions are made.)
Inform students next lesson, they will be Skyping with Sekolah Sugar Group School in
Indonesia. They will be talking to the students about their postcards.
Finish lesson with story: Journey of the Sea Turtle by Mark Wilson (This story draws
attention to the fragile survival of the loggerhead turtle population. It looks at the migratory
habits of turtles and the challenges they face in order to continue to survive.)
This is the story of a turtle which returns to the beach where it was born, to find that not
only are the predatory shadow birds not there anymore but that the beach itself is now
densely populated and built upon.
Evaluation / Reflection:
This lesson plan has not been implemented.
