The Personal Narrative genre is extremely flexible one relying on elements of storytelling as opposed to more formal genres such as research and expository writing. A strong personal narrative will challenge readers and have them wondering where the writer will take them next rather than simply providing a blue print. A strong personal narrative places readers at the scene, to have a look around for themselves and draw their own conclusions rather than telling them what they see and what to think. Perhaps most importantly, a strong personal narrative presents a writer in a state of earnest, ongoing inquiry. -Jason Wirtz
Our Goal 1. The task is to write a personal narrative about your experience with writing.
Questions to think about:
What are some of your earliest memories with writing Reflect on a time when you were particularly engaged with a writing task. Has a lack of writing ability ever acted as a barrier or source of embarrassment? How have you learned to write over time? Where do you think your development as a writer is headed? What has been your most proud moment to date as a writer Writing often affects others- write about a time when your writing had an effect on someone or a time where someone elses writing affected you. Logistics: Approximately 1 and half pages
Quote about narratives Children, I mean, think of your own childhood, how important the bedtime story was. How important these imaginary experiences were for you. They helped shape reality, and I think human beings wouldn't be human without narrative fiction. -Paul Auster
