Emergency Response
Knowing what to do in an emergency may save a life. It is a good idea to practice some basic first aid
skills so that you will be prepared. Review the following information with your students. Then, do the
activity.
Emergency Phone Call:
Whenever a victim is in a life-threatening situation, you should always call for help. Many
communities have access to emergency services by calling 911. This number will connect you to a
dispatch person who can transfer your call. If your community does not have a 911 service, you can
dial 0 for the operator, or dial your local hospital or fire station directly.
When you make an emergency call, you should always give the following information:
1. Give your name and the phone number from where you are calling. This will help the dispatcher
if your phone line is disconnected.
2. Give the address and location of the emergency. This information will be routed to the
emergency service people.
3. Describe the accident. This will help the dispatcher decide what emergency services may be
required and what they should be prepared for.
Activity:
Have your students practice making emergency phone calls. Write brief descriptions of emergency
situations on slips of paper and have your students select them from a hat. Pair students with partners
and have them take turns being the dispatcher and the emergency caller. Have a couple of students
model their conversations in front of the class.
