This case of Terry Tescos Long Shelf Life is based on the career of Terry Leahy at Tesco,
Terry Leahy was the person who transformed Tesco from a worn-out and shabby
supermarket to the largest company in Britain. His efforts of transforming this superstore are
undeniable. Leahy had implemented a four - branched strategy for transforming Tesco.
Under the supervision of Terry the profits of Tesco tripled to over 2 billion from 1997 to
2005.
Because of Terry, Tesco grew into a massive market of worth 35 billion. He was a retailer
basically from UK. Terry Leahy belonged to a very normal and simple family, so he started
his journey from nothing. Tesco currently has a 30% share of the UK groceries markets
nearly as large as its two adjacent competitors, Sainsbury and Wal-Mart supported by Asda,
In order to operate or expand internationally it used its solid domestic base, concluding with
the launch of a series of stores in the native land of Wal-Mart at the end of 2007.
The case primarily focuses at the leader, who had been responsible for this notable growth
and development. His success and achievements are altogether astonishing. It highlights how
Terry Leahy started his journey from zero, as he belonged to very ordinary ignorant family.
Tesco has come a long way since the beginning of the 1990s. He is very competent as at the
age of 25 he joined Tesco as marketing manager and within 3 years he became marketing
director. Leahy was appointed to the board in 1992 in1995 Tesco became the UKs biggest
retailer. Leahy became Chief executive in 1997
Terry raised himself from council house kid to Britain's most accepted business leader and
adviser to the British Prime Minister. Behind his success, efficiency and durability as a leader
there are different factors like ambition, passion, sincerity and personal example. He had
almost all the desirable and appropriate qualities of an effective leader. The three aspects that
enable the participants need to know about the challenging leaders i.e. How leaders should
be, what they need to know and what they should do. The case also permits discovering other
